That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (転生したらスライムだった件, Tensei Shitara Suraimu Datta Ken), also known as Regarding Reincarnated to Slime and the short name TenSura (転スラ), is a Japanese fantasy light novel series written by Fuse [ja], and illustrated by Mitz Vah. The story follows Satoru Mikami, a salaryman who is murdered and then reincarnated in a sword and sorcery world as a titular slime, who goes on to gather allies to build his nation of monsters.
It was serialized online from 2013 to 2016 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. It was later acquired by Micro Magazine, which published the first light novel volume in 2014. Twenty-one volumes have been released as of October 2023. The light novel has been licensed in North America by Yen Press, who published the first volume in December 2017. It has received a manga adaptation published by Kodansha along with five manga spin-offs published, respectively, by Micro Magazine and Kodansha, and an anime television series adaptation produced by Eight Bit, which aired from October 2018 to March 2019. A second season of the anime series aired from January to September 2021, and an anime adaptation of the second spin-off manga aired from April to June 2021. An anime film was released in November 2022. A three-episode original net animation spin-off titled Visions of Coleus was released in November 2023. A third season is set to premiere in April 2024.
Synopsis[]
It is just another ordinary day for Satoru Mikami. The sun is shining brightly on the streets of Tokyo, and he is in the midst of a discussion with his colleagues when suddenly he gets stabbed by a passing robber. The average 37-year-old corporate worker is now at death's door, and he has only one regret—dying a virgin. Fading out, he is startled by a mysterious AI-like voice reciting commands.
Satoru abruptly wakes up in the middle of a strange cave, but something odd has happened: he is now a goop of slime! Thanks to his new body, he has acquired the skill to absorb anything and obtain its appearance and abilities. While testing out his newfound powers and exploring the cave, he stumbles upon a massive dragon named Veldora, who has been sealed away for the past three hundred years. After quickly befriending the beast, Satoru decides to help him escape; in exchange, Satoru is bestowed a new name: "Rimuru Tempest."
Wishing to avoid a life like his boring and mundane past, Rimuru is about to set out on a grand quest that will change his own destiny and the fate of his new world.

Character[]
Rimuru is the protagonist of the film and the series. The initial setting is that Satoru Mikami (voiced by Takuatsu Terashima), a Japanese businessman, was stabbed to death by a street demon and reincarnated as a demon slime, and that he is the protagonist of the story. Rimuru's "previous life" in the work refers to the period of Mikami Satoru's life. Incidentally, he was a college graduate and a company employee of a major general contractor.
He became a "named monster" by exchanging her name with Veldora, the storm dragon, a willful creature she first encountered in the cave where she was reincarnated, and she acquired the ability to mimic human form by absorbing Shizu, the first compatriot with whom she had a connection in the reincarnated world. Although her human body is more feminine in appearance, she is biologically asexual, and since her mentality is the same as in her previous life, her tone of voice is masculine, etc.
Basically, he is a jovial, mild-mannered pacifist who cannot say no when asked for help, including when he was a businessman. He considers the demons under his charge whom he has named as his family, and he has developed a ruthlessness that only shows no mercy to those who harm his own people. He is aware of his shortcomings, such as his talent as a genius and his subordinates' willingness to carry out even the most absurd orders with a smile, his tendency to get carried away and make mistakes, his loss of judgment when he gets passionate, his tendency to draw wrong conclusions without listening to those who are trying to correct him, and his repeated failure to give permission without thinking about the consequences of his action, which he then regrets. He is aware of his shortcomings, such as repeatedly making the mistake of not listening to the person who is trying to correct him and coming to the wrong conclusion.
The basic principle of his action is "to create a country where all races can live happily and comfortably," and as a result of his efforts, the food, clothing, and shelter of the Federation of Demon Nations (Jura Tempest Federation) that Rimuru founded eventually reached a level that is comparable to those of most other countries. On the other hand, he believes that freedom of thought, speech, and expression should be guaranteed in order to create diversity and develop culture (entertainment), so he does not have ambitions such as world domination.
As for friendships, he is friends with the storm dragon Veldora for the first time, and they are brothers-in-law and the greatest of allies, sending each other their names and connecting the corridors of souls/soul corridors; he is close friends with the demon king Milim, brother apprentices with the dwarf king Gazel Dwargo, and is friends with the celestial emperor Elmesia El Ru Sarion as a fellow trickster.
Abilities[]
"It's simple. I want to create a world where life is as convenient as I wish it to be. A comfortable world where everyone can laugh and enjoy their lives as much as possible. That's what I truly and honestly want.
deals without power are nonsense, and power without ideals is empty, right? I'm a greedy guy, but I don't have an interest in seeking power just for the sake of power, without the ambition to do something with it."― Rimuru to Erald Grimwald, Light Novel Volume 6, Chapter 1
At the time of his reincarnation, Rimuru believes that when blood is insufficient, people die, and so he becomes a slime, a "body that does not need blood". Slime is also described as a viscous creature or demon race in this work, and is usually set as the lowest-ranking monster that does not think, only absorbs, divides, and regenerates itself repeatedly, and rarely leaves its habitat.
EP | Demon Slime: 171.15 million 7789 (+ 2.28 million for the Dragon Blade) → Ultimate Slime: Unknown (Hundreds of millions more?) |
The body is an aggregate of cells that combines the functions of brain cells, nerves, and muscles, and since the slime race has no need to reproduce in this work, Rimuru herself, whose body is slime, has no biological sex, and even when she later acquires the ability to transform into a human, her transformed body is neither male nor female but asexual.
Rimuru is a master swordsman trained by Hakurou and further refined in the fight with Hinata. Rimuru was able to completely overwhelm Yuuki Kagurazaka with pure skill. Rimuru's weapon of choice is a Katana.

After awakening, he evolved into a "Demon Slime" with greatly increased physical abilities and more than ten times the amount of magical elements.
Furthermore, in Book 15, after preying on Veldora, who was controlled by Rudra, Ciel analyzed the prey and evolved it into the "Ultimate Slime," the fifth "dragon species" (subspecies), which is the highest level Holy Demon Spirit in the world, and the "Dragon Demon Viscous Star God Body" (Ultimate Slime). It evolved into the "Ultimate Slime," the fifth "dragon species" (subspecies) in the world, and gained the same amount of magical elements as Veldora.

Critical response[]
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 53% with an average rating of 5.8/10, based on 15 reviews. On Metacritic, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie – Scarlet Bond has a weighted average score of 41 out of 100, based on 5 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by PostTrak reported 77% of audience members gave the film a positive score, with 58% saying they would definitely recommend it.
Demelza of Anime UK News gave the film a score of 7 out of 10, feeling that it was "a fun installment of the series, but it's not without issues and certainly isn't something you can enjoy without having kept up to date with the TV series. It's an interesting story that's held back by being divorced from the canon material and unable to leave any lasting effects." She lauded the well-written stories of Hiiro and Towa, the animation done by Eight Bit which she felt was "just as good as its TV counterparts", the well-fit new music compositions, and the "energetic" theme song. However, she criticized how Rimuru was written in the film, feeling that the character was "far more powerful than anyone else in this story and that overshadows the struggles Hiiro faces" and wishing he "had stayed behind in Tempest and just sent the group of Ogres by themselves, which would have made for more compelling drama in the end." Richard Eisenbeis at Anime News Network graded the film "C+", feeling that it was "above average as far as original, tie-in anime films go. There were apparent attempts to connect the movie in a meaningful way to both the past and future of the story, and the film's newly created lead, Hiiro, is a character worth exploring. But other than that, everything about the film is forgettable, from the villains and the one-off heroine to the plot and setting." Eisenbeis praised the film for depicting a "justifiable" motives of Hiiro, its visual that he felt was "a step up from the TV series", and the theme song. However, he criticized how Rimuru was utilized in the film, feeling that the character was "so powerful he gets in the way of the story the film wants to tell", and the music for being "forgettable". Phil Hoad of The Guardian gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, feeling that it was similar to "having the contents of a Dungeons & Dragons manual screamed at you by your 12-year-old nephew after a Haribo binge – but it's kind of fun trying to keep up." Hoad felt that the film being in medias res was "not helpful", but he noted it had "crunchily animated brawls every five minutes and a playful embrace of sword'n'sorcery hokum that gives it a little lift" and found a "po-faced mope of a lead" in Hiiro.
Wendy Ide of The Observer gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, believing that familiarity with the previous adaptations of the source material was needed to understand the work. Ide felt the film was "visually striking, and at times somewhat overwhelming." Richard Whittaker at The Austin Chronicle also gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, feeling that it "collapses into the hourlong, supposedly epic but ultimately low-stakes multifront battle de rigueur in too much anime right now." Whittaker also felt that the film was not accessible to first-time viewers and would not make long-term fans satisfy. He criticized the "clumsy" comedy, "airless" script about Towa's poisoning, and cramming of cameos for every background characters, believing the film "might have been better as a season." Simon Abrams of TheWrap felt the film was "underwhelming because its creators don't seem to know how to translate their show's ever-mutating high-concept appeal into a feature-length movie." Abrams also felt the film did not compare well with the light novel, noted how Rimuru was written as a secondary role in his film, and found the characters Hiiro and Towa were not meshing well with the recurring characters.
