Shurato, the Celestial Legend (天空戦記 シュラト Tenkū Senki Shurato, "Shurato of the Heaven War) - (occasionally spelled in the Siddhaṃ script on the logo and related merchandise) is a Japanese manga created, written and illustrated by Hiroshi Kawamoto and later adapted to anime by Tatsunoko Productions. It ran 38 episodes on TV Tokyo from April 6, 1989 to January 18, 1990 and also received a 6-episode OVA follow up series named Shurato: Dark Genesis (シュラト 創世への暗闘, Shurato Sōsei e no Antō, lit. "Shurato: The Secret Feud of Creation"), that ran from August 16, 1991 to March 16, 1992. It was one of the most popular shōnen anime series of 1989.

Set in a parallel world called "Tenkūkai", which exists alongside Earth, evil forces known as the Asura Gods threaten to overcome the forces of good, causing the magical leader of this realm to transport warriors from Earth to their world. It was heavily based on Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and covered a range of topics, including brotherhood, reincarnation, camaraderie, interdimensional travel, destiny, and spiritual energy.

Overview

A fighting action work with elements of different world fantasy and youth ensemble drama, in which many young people wearing armor called "Shakti" fight fiercely in a different world.

In 1988, the year before, as a so-called "Battle Suit" and "Wearing" "Beauty Boy Animation" under the influence of " Saint Seiya ," which was a huge commercial success after the TV animation was aired for three years from 1986 . It is a work known along with "Ronin Warriors" produced by Sunrise, and many beautiful characters designed by Matsuri Okuda gained popularity mainly among females.

Planning and production

The story world of this work is based on esoteric Buddhism and Indian mythology , and the main feature of the work is that the main pillar of the work is composed of an oriental world view. It was Satoru Akahori , a scriptwriter who was in charge of the series composition , who was in charge of the series composition . Although requested, I bought a book of Indian mythology along with a book of esoteric Buddhism, thinking that it would be similar, and used it as a reference material. As a result, Indian mythology became the main motif  .

In this way, Akahori, who was working on the production of the work as a "battle suit thing" based on Indian mythology, said from the main sponsor Bandai , " Since Mini 4WD is popular, let's put Mini 4WD in" Shrat ". Was instructed. At first, Akahori objected, but in the end it was realized by the instructions of the producer. She said that Akahori said she realized that she was in this work and that she "has a product in the work"  .

Since it is a work dealing with esoteric Buddhism , there was a rumor that it was discontinued due to a complaint from a religious group , and that rumor became a hot topic on a radio program, so Tatsunoko Production is actually "sorry" from some fans. A letter such as was sent. In reality, there were no protests by such groups, and of course the reason for the termination was not religious  .

Production staff

  • staff
    • Among the participating staff other than Tatsunoko Production, there are many people related to Ashi Productions , such as Naoyoshi Kusaka, Kato Takao , Yasushi Murayama for directing, Nobuyoshi Habara for drawing , Akio Takami (both drawing directors) . The company is credited as an outsourced recording production, but it is also in charge of the actual production, and Habara is also in charge of some design work.
    • The voice actors are Toshihiko Seki , Kazuhiko Inoue , and Yuko Mizutani , who were in charge of the protagonist trio in " Zillion " directed by Mizuho Nishikubo in the same production company in 1987, and were appointed as the main voice actors. I was in charge of the character. And Takehito Koyasu , who became the first regular in the role of Guy, was selected and became famous.
    • Toshiki Inoue , one of the screenwriters, dropped this work to participate in " Ranma 1/2 "  . Inoue states that he was a capacity over at the time.
  • Drawing
    • The drawing quality was generally maintained at a high level at the beginning of the broadcast, but the outsourcing to overseas increased immediately after the end of the 2nd course, and at the same time, it became a state commonly called " drawing collapse " in later animations. A similar sharp deterioration in quality was revealed . Okuda mainly worked on copyright illustrations for anime magazines , but in the " Monthly Newtype " article, Michitaka Kikuchi , who was not directly related to this work, was in charge of many original copyright illustrations  . From that flow, Kikuchi is in charge of the animation director in the final episode.

Toy development

Bandai , the main sponsor, has released a plastic model (a total of four types, the main character Shrat and the enemy Guy, and Shrat's friends Hyuga and Ryoma) that reproduce the character's wearing state of the god armor .

By removing the parts of the sacred armor from the main body and attaching it to the chassis of the separately sold Bandai Hyper Racer 4WD, a gimmick was prepared that can reproduce the "God armor (Balda)" state for movement. However, due to the design of the god armor, the range of motion was severely restricted and it was difficult to pose. In addition to that, a separately sold product was required to reproduce the running gimmick, and it did not lead to a hit.

Synopsis

Main article: List of Legend of Heavenly Sphere Shurato characters

The plot revolves around two boys, Shurato Hidaka and Gai Kuroki, lifelong best friends who are polar opposites of each other in appearance and personality. While fighting each other in a martial arts tournament, they are suddenly encased in a beam of light and transported to a parallel world, Tenkūkai, where modern technology does not exist and instead the people rely on Sohma, a form of spiritual energy.

Shurato discovers he is actually the reincarnation of an ancient king of the same name, who once ruled this world, and one of the "Hachibushu", a group of eight legendary warriors with large quantities of Sohma, and was brought here along with Gai to fight the Asura Gods, a legion of destructive warriors. However, for unknown reasons, Gai attempts to kill Shurato repeatedly, confusing Shurato as the real Gai is a pacifist and the most compassionate person he knows.

Things quickly go wrong when Shurato and another of the Hachibushu, Ten-ō Hyūga, are framed for the petrification of Lady Vishnu, a powerful divinity and the leader of the people of Tenkūkai. The actual culprit, Vishnu's highest advisor and Asura spy Indrah, and the corrupted Gai manage to convince the remainder of the Hachibushu, as well as all of Tenkūkai's warriors and soldiers, that Shurato and Hyūga are evil and must be killed.

Although at first reluctant to get involved, Shurato eventually resolves to aid Hyūga in uncovering the conspiracy and cure Vishnu. They are accompanied by the young Tenkūkai spirit priestess Lakshu, and two others of the Hachibushu, Ryū-ō Ryōma and Karura-ō Reiga. Along the way, they engage in battle with the other four of the Hachibushu, sinister Asura agents in league with Indrah, and the majority of Tenkūkai's population.

Say "Bring a delicious place with a few lines" to Guy who has exchanged spirits with Shrat (from Soul Lovers Only "Yaksha Ou is Tough"), and the voice actor in charge of Renge, Yumiko, and Me is Hayashibara. In addition to being alone with Megumi, Hayashibara played the main character, Ranma, in the anime " Ranma 1/2 " at the time of the main broadcast, and when Renge wears water, she transforms into Yumiko Hidaka and Me. It was a lot of playfulness, such as making a story (Hachibe Shu THE WORLD "Ranma 1/3").
