As of February 2023, the manga's individual chapters have been collected into ten volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by Studio Mother aired from April to June 2024, with a second season set to premiere in Q4 of the same year.

Synopsis[]

An ordinary salaryman dies one day and is reborn as Ars Louvent, the son of a noble. Although he isn't talented in magic or swordplay, he does have one skill that no one else possesses: "Appraisal." Using this ability, Ars can determine a person's current strength, how much potential they hold, and where their talents rest.

This skill is especially useful in the present situation of the country. The government is corrupt, revolts occur more often than not, and nobles far and wide are strengthening their fortifications in preparation for an all-out war. With this in mind, Ars realizes he too must prepare by gathering talented people.

From a persecuted foreigner unparalleled with the sword, a slave with an unknown talent for magic, to a timid boy with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge—Ars begins to surround himself with people to support him, aiming to create the most powerful territory.

Written by Miraijin A, the light novel began publication on the novel posting website Shōsetsuka ni Narō on October 31, 2019. The series was later acquired by Kodansha, who published the series with illustrations by Jimmy under their Kodansha Ranobe Books imprint beginning on July 2, 2020. As of December 2022, four volumes have been released.

In March 2022, Kodansha USA announced that they also licensed the light novel series for English publication.

In November 2021, Kodansha USA announced that they licensed the manga for English publication, with the first volume being released in September 2022.

Character[]


He is the heir son of the Louvent family. He has semi-long black hair and blue eyes, and has memories of his previous life as a Japanese businessman. He grew up surrounded by his strict but kind father, Raven, and the kind people of the fiefdom, but as he grew up and came to understand the current situation of the fiefdom, he became convinced that the entire country would be plunged into a turbulent time in the near future. Since his reincarnation, he has awakened the ability to see into the abilities of others, which he has named "appraisal" to verify his abilities.

Appraisals can see into the abilities of others, but not their own. In addition, since it can only ascertain simple abilities and potentials, it cannot know the special skills that a person possesses. However, this ability is ideal for discovering people who have talents but cannot fully utilize them, or people buried in the background. Starting with his discovery of the talent of Ritsu Muses, he went on to discover such outstanding talents as Charlotte Wraith and Rosell Kischa.

In the midst of all this, his father died when he was 10 years old, and he officially became a lord at a very young age. Soon after, the situation deteriorates, and as a lord, he is inevitably drawn into the world of warfare.

─ The protagonist, Ars Louvent, is a Japanese businessman who has led an ordinary life for 35 years. But finds himself reincarnated in another world. The family into which he was reincarnated, the Louvent family, is a remote fief, and its status as an aristocrat is near the bottom of the heap. However, because of this, he is close to his people, and thanks to the teachings of his strict but kind father, Ars enjoys his second life and feels a strong attachment to his land. However, the world is entering an era of warfare, and Ars decides to fight as a lord to protect his fiefdom and his people, transforming it from a weak estate to the most powerful one in the world.
Into the Age of Rivalry
─ In the fantasy world of swords and sorcery, Ars Louvent is born as a legitimate son of the Louvent family in a frontier territory. However, the Sammaforth Empire, to which the Louvent family belongs, has lost the emperor's power of persuasion due to years of corruption, and there is a growing momentum for independence in various regions. The empire was made up of seven provinces, each of which had begun to ignore imperial commands and become independent, and the province of Missian, where Ars and his family lived, was no exception.
─ The death of the governor of the province of Missian coincided with a struggle for the succession of the governor. Ars and the other weak nobles find themselves thrown into the vortex of war.

Abilities[]

Ars is a great lord in Lamberk: he is able to help other people and makes no boundaries for them, which is why people in Lamberk genuinely treat Ars as a family. Ars is able to see things from a broader perspective which allows him to seize victory before the fighting has even begun, of which is at large due to his great diplomacy and use of logistics, however one major contributor is also his unique skill, Appraisal. The skill allows him to determine the status of people at will which gives him the advantage he needs.

Ars learned a technique to create fire, water, and other mysterious phenomena, Ars magic required magic tools. Ars have a magic tool that looks like a gauntlet that gave by his father to learn more about magic. Due to his lack of aptitude for magic, he trained himself to use magic.

Ars is decent handling a sword as he trained himself after his father fell ill. When his father died, he didn't stop training since he needed it as to be prepared for the incoming battles, and after winning a war, he was further trained by Ritsu for swordsmanship, and Mireilla for martial combat and stamina. Ars has a decent amount of magic power [Rank as C] even if they needed to use a tool to activate a certain magic.

Since his reincarnation, Ars Louvent has awakened to a mysterious ability to know the abilities a person possesses when he sees them, which Ars named his "Appraisal" skill. Having verified this ability since childhood, Ars decides to use this power to find talent and gather useful people for his territory. Ars was young and inexperienced as a lord, so he wanted to gather people who could survive in a war-torn world and thereby protect his territory. Ars discovers the talent buried in the countryside and increases the number of his friends.

  • An appraisal is a special power he possess since birth. When Ars stare at something, he can obtain detailed information about it. It is possible to appraise only human abilities.
  • It's not like someone told me that this is an ability called appraisal. He gave it a name myself. I thought it was appropriate to call it an appraisal because it is an ability to understand the details of things.
  • Appraisal Information: This is how the statuses are displayed, reminiscent of a certain historical game Ars like to play.

  • After looking at several people, I've concluded that it's just like a certain historical game to some extent. Next, though, is aptitude. D is the lowest and S is the highest.

    • Archers have an aptitude for archery combat & Scouting.
    • A magical soldier (Magic) has an aptitude for magical combat.

  • After Ars Evolved his appraisal skill, he can see people's information (Age, Birthday, Place were they born, Family, etc.) more than their value.

In time, Ars keeps recruiting people in his country and other countries by listing a post to hire for their new vassal or their mercenary. Ars keeps his dream as the embodiment that he will make a place where children can laugh and live happily. He treasures the people around him, even the soldiers and mercenaries, as equals.

Originally an orphan from the Marca race who suffers with discrimination from other races in the country after the war, he is recruited by Ars as his first retainer. Despite suffering prejudice at first, Ritsu's loyalty to Ars and outstanding gift for combat and leadership makes him earn the trust of the rest of the Louvent family and he becomes commander of their army.

An orphan whom Ars met in the city of Canare while searching for someone skilled in magic at his request. She grew up in a slum without parents for as long as he can remember. She was caught stealing food from the house of the lord who held the slum together, but because of her good looks, she was sold as a slave and bought by Ars for five silver coins. Despite having never fired magic before, she showed Ritsu and Raven that her magic was powerful enough to create craters, and was hired by the Louvent family as a magician. A year later, she has achieved such a reputation for military prowess that she is offered a job, but she refuses to accept it and instead becomes a mainstay in the Lamberg army as a Captain of the magician platoon.

Ars lead an army of about 16,000+ and keep counting; the soldiers are skilled, talented, and almost as powerful as Ritsu, Thomas, and Mireilla. The army force of Lamberk is unstoppable in battle, even if it isn't led by Ritsu. But now the army of Lamberk is more powerful because of Mireilla's leadership as acting commander and strategist.

TV Anime[]

An anime television series adaptation was announced on May 9, 2023. It will be produced by Studio Mother and directed by Takao Kato, with scripts written by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, character designs handled by Yūko Yahiro, and music composed by Kujira Yumemi. The series is set to premiere on April 7, 2024 on CBC and TBS' brand new Agaru Anime [ja] programming block. The opening theme song, "Blue Days" (ブルーデイズ, Burū Deizu), is performed by True.

The anime will continue to air on CBC and TBS' 28 affiliate stations' Agaru Anime programming block in Fall 2024. Crunchyroll streamed the anime with subtitles and later with a German dub. After the airing of the final episode of the first season, a second season was announced, which is set to premiere in the fall of the same year, on the same programming block.

He also discovers that he possesses the ability to appraise other individuals and measure their talents. Three years later, he convinces a soldier who isn't good at handling a spear to take up archery instead, which he in turn is very skilled at. He later finds an orphan named Ritsu Muses being mistreated by the villagers due to his race and takes him in, demanding that his servants treat him with respect. Ars's father Raven agrees to let him stay if he can beat him in a mock duel. With some help from Ars, Ritsu manages to win the fight and he officially becomes Ars's retainer.

While learning about the conflicting war in their region, Ars is sent to find someone who can use magic for Raven's army. During his search, Ars feels pity for the poor and homeless, but Ritsu convinces him that he cannot help them at this point. A girl steals Ars's money and they chase her down, defeating some slave traders who are after her, as they intend to sell her into slavery after they caught her trying to steal from them. The girl introduces herself as Charlotte Wraith. Realizing that she can use magic, they invite her to become Ars's second retainer, but she declines as she is concerned about the homeless kids. Sometime later, the homeless kids inform them that Charlotte has been captured by the same slave traders from before.
3 "Answer"

Ars and Ritsu follow the slave traders to their lair and after Ritsu defeats them, Ars offers to buy Charlotte from them. After some bribing, their leader Albert reluctantly agrees to sell her to them. Learning of Ars's plan to create a peaceful town for everyone to be happy in, Charlotte finally accepts Ars's offer and after Ritsu gives her a pendent that he found earlier, shows off her magic skills. Raven also accepts her as Ars's retainer.
4 "Where Talent Dwells"

Three years later, the war is still going on and Raven's army has scored many victories thanks to Charlotte, who has now become a powerful mage. At this time, Ars now has two younger siblings. Ars, Ritsu, and Charlotte search for a group of talented hunters to recruit them. Charlotte is then revealed to have feelings for Ars. They meet the hunters and invite them to be soldiers. Ars also meets their timid younger brother Rosell, who reluctantly goes with his brothers to Ars's mansion. In the library, they learn that Rosell has skilled knowledge. After some convincing from his father and brothers, he finally agrees to join Ars.
5 "The Storm Arrives!"

Raven grows ill from the war and Ars learns that he has an arranged bride, who is a girl named Lysia Plaid. Reading her, Ars realizes how devious she can be, but pretends to be oblivious to this. After they spend the day together, Lysia soon truly begins to develop feelings for Ars, who in response tells her about his skills. Charlotte secretly grows jealous of Lysia. The next day, Lysia heads home, having decided to marry Ars after all in the future. Ars remains in contact with her via letters.
6 "The Face of a Warrior"

As Raven's illness grows worse, he learns of an assassination. Ars attends a meeting with the nobles alongside his subordinates regarding the war and the murder. Lysia's father, who also attended the meeting, approves of his future marriage to his daughter. Concerned about his father, Ars becomes determined to help by training hard. However, Raven warns him that he is not cut out for fighting in the war yet. He is traumatized after a war criminal is beheaded in front of him. Raven then prepares to engage the enemy, bringing Ritsu, Charlotte, and Rosell along.
7 "Succession"

Raven's army again emerges victorious, but his illness worsens again upon returning home. Meanwhile, Ars is still training so he can be involved in the war. Lysia returns and Ritsu, Charlotte, and Rosell inform her of Ars's pain. Raven later calls the four to his room and requests for them to help Ars. After spending the night with his family, Raven dies from his illness. Ars officially becomes the head of House Louvent while Ritsu, Charlotte, Rosell, and Lysia recall their times with Raven. A woman with red hair and purple eyes hears about the assassination.
8 "A New Generation"

Three months after Raven's death, Ars announces to the nobles that he is now House Louvant's new lord. Continuing the fight in the war, Ars learns of a band of mercenaries called Shadow who can help them get information on their enemies. They visit an orphanage that Ars built to shelter the homeless kids from earlier, whose lives have now improved for the better. Lysia also meets up with them again. That night, after some competition between Lysia and Charlotte, Ars and Rosell end up sleeping with them, although the boys fail to get any sleep. The next day, the group heads to the bar that Shadow owns where they confront their leader, Fam, who was previously disguised as a waitress. Ars also tells her about his skills after she demands how he knew her true identity. After some convincing, Fam agrees to get them the information they need.
9 "Sounding Out"

After getting the required information from Fam, who is revealed to be a man disguised as a girl, Ars informs the nobles of what he learned. They then go to inform the Perena County's leader that he has been duped by their enemies. Negotiations nearly turn rough, but the county chief of Massa reveals himself, having decided to come along with Ars. Now aware of the truth, the chief of Perena agrees to ally with them. Visiting his father's grave, Ars is grateful of Ritsu, Charlotte, and Rosell for being supportive of him while two other nobles also visit Raven's grave to honor him. Ars meets Lord Couran.
10 "Couran Salamakhia"

Ars and his subordinates are invited to Lord Couran's party, though Charlotte gets left behind. Once there, Ars sees how high his stats are, but also suspects something is amiss. Couran later has a private talk with Ars regarding their subordinates and also decides to make him Canarre's headman. Afterward, Ars is invited to a meeting and tasked to look for more talented people, to which Couran reveals that he knows of his abilities. Ars hires Fam to help them. A drunk girl named Mirelle later gets a job at Fam's bar. She later shares information with Fam, who in turn has her stay with Ars. Meanwhile, Couran's brother Vasmarque is preparing to make his next move to capture Mirelle.
11 "Mireille Grangeon"

Ritsu is skeptical of letting Mirelle stay because of her infamous history, but Ars agrees to allow her to stay. Mirelle is disliked by most of the subordinates (except for Charlotte) due to her incompetence, so they decide to settle things in a mock battle. Most of the soldiers join Ritsu, while Ars is partnered with Mirelle. During the fight, a mage working for Mirelle informs Ritsu of her plan, but the soldiers discover his ruse. Mirelle reveals her intelligence by tricking Ritsu’s team into attacking decoy targets before leading them to chase her carrying Ars.
12 "Oath"

As the group chase after Mirelle and Ars, she manages to lead them into some traps that she set earlier. Lysia watches the group from the distance along with the other servants. Meanwhile, the rookie soldiers can outsmart Ritsu's team, prompting Charlotte and Rosell to run, though the former accidentally knocks herself out. Mirelle proceeds to go after Rosell with Ritsu right behind her. In the end, Mirelle's team wins the mock battle. The subordinate finally accepts Mirelle and Ars explains his goal to her. She then suggests that he should become the next emperor, which makes him nervous. The group then has a party to celebrate Mirelle's victory in the mock battle. The next day, as Lysia leaves, Ars receives a letter from Lord Couran and his subordinates all decide to go with him.

After the airing of the final episode of the first season, a second season was announced, which is set to premiere on September 29 of the same year, on the same programming block. For the second season, the opening theme song is "SKILLAWAKE", performed by PassCode, while the ending theme song is "Familiar", performed by Yuki Tanaka.

Critical Reception[]

Richard Eisenbeis wrote in Anime News Network that the anime's first episodes are "simple and predictable pattern". He noted that the introduction of Lysia "breaks the pattern things get more interesting" adding that Ars' reaction to Lysia's ability makes his weakness clear, thus, adding stakes and drama to the story. He concludes that the anime blends comedy and heartwarming moments, highlighting the hope that one good leader can bring peace and prosperity to a failing empire.
