Character[]

Red River Series is about a fifteen-year-old Japanese girl named Yuri Suzuki, who time travels to Hattusa WP, the capital of the Hittite Empire WP in Anatolia WP. She was summoned by Queen Nakia who means to use Yuri as a human sacrifice. Yuri's blood is the key element needed in placing a curse upon the princes of the land so that they will perish, leaving Nakia's son as the sole heir to the throne. As the story progresses, however, Yuri not only repeatedly manages to escape Nakia's scheming, she also becomes revered as an incarnation of the goddess Ishtar WP and falls in love with prince Kail.

Yuri falls in love with Kail early on in the story. Torn between her desire to return to her original time and her love for Kail, which he reciprocates, Yuri ultimately decides to remain in Anatolia forever. In a desperate attempt to overthrow Queen Nakia, she raises a private army and unites other factions loyal to her and Kail, and eventually succeeds in deposing Queen Nakia once and for all. She marries Kail and ascends to the title of Tawananna, the Hittite Queen.

Volume 1
  • In 1995, Yuri Suzuki was living in Japan on a date with her boyfriend Satoshi Himuro when she was pulled into the water by an unknown hand that appeared from a pool of water and summoned her to the Hittite Empire in the 14th century BC. There, Yuri is captured to be sacrificed in a cursing ritual performed by Nakia, and nearly decapitated by Nakia, but with the intervention of Kail Mursili, she manages to get out of the situation. With Kail's suggestion, Yuri is forced to live under the false identity of Kail's sidekick until she returns to Japan. Yuri hears from Kail that she may be able to return to her original world if she has the clothes she wore when she came to the Hittite Empire, so she sneaks into Nakia's mansion with Tito. However, Zuwa soon finds them, and Tito is captured and brutally murdered in Yuri's place. With the help of Kail and Il Bani, Yuri seizes the chance to return to Japan, which comes only once a year, but she decides to remain in the Hittite empire, saying she cannot return until she has avenged Tito's enemies. Nakia, who wants to separate Kail and Yuri for a cursing ceremony, sends Kail to the battlefield, but Kail takes Yuri off to war, claiming that she is an incarnation of Ishtar, the goddess of war.
Volume 2
  • Due to Nakia's plot, Hadi and the other three sisters mistakenly believe that Yuri Suzuki is responsible for the murder of her brother Tito, and Yuri is put into a state of suspended animation by Hadi. The unconscious Yuri is abducted by Zuwa, but with the help of Talos, she returns to Kail. She also defeats Zuwa with an iron sword given to her by Talos and is praised by the soldiers of the Hittite Empire as an incarnation of Ishtar, the goddess of war. Meanwhile, Zananza Hattusili, the fourth prince of the Hittite Empire and a close friend of Kail Mursili, returns from a distant war. Yuri, together with Kail and Zananza, is invited to a party at the royal palace hosted by Nakia. There, Zananza loses his reason due to Nakia's curse, kidnaps Yuri, and flees the Hittite Empire. When Zananza arrives in the town of Kidswatna, he tries to take Yuri's body for himself by force, but at that moment, soldiers of the Mitanni Kingdom, which is hostile to the Hittite Empire, enter the town, set it on fire, and go on a rampage. Zananza, freed from her curse, learns that the Mitanni army is secretly working to invade the Hittite Empire and that the person leading the soldiers is Mattiwaza, who sends Yuri to Kail.
Volume 3
  • Thanks to the efforts of Yuri Suzuki and Zananza Hattusiri, the Hittite Empire avoids a surprise attack by the Mitanni Kingdom. However, for the sake of convenience, Zananza is accused of a crime by the Senate for kidnapping Yuri, who is now a concubine of Kail Mursili. However, Yuri's quick thinking allows him to get away with the crime, but Kail continues to doubt the relationship between Zananza and Yuri. Kail, in a fit of self-loathing, repeatedly coldly rejects Yuri, declaring that he will leave her behind on his expedition to the Kingdom of Mitanni, but thanks to the stand of the three sisters, including Hadi, Kail is able to keep Yuri with him again. The Hittite army led by Yuri and Kail succeeded in capturing the fortified city of Malatya, located on the border with the Kingdom of Mitanni, in five days. Soon after, Kail got the information that Mattiwaza was also heading toward Malatya, and he started to retreat. Yuri, who was looking for the Eye of the Dragon, a cursed tool to deceive people's minds in Malatya, fell for Ulhi Sharma's trick and was taken away by Mattiwaza. Mattiwaza plans to massacre Yuri in front of her people, as she is a popular incarnation of Ishtar, the goddess of war.
Volume 4
  • Yuri Suzuki, abducted by Mattiwaza of the Mitanni Kingdom, improves the treatment of Hittite prisoners of war in the Mitanni Kingdom and begins to provide personal care to seriously ill people regardless of their nationality. The Hittite prisoners of war and the Mitanni people see this and support Yuri as an incarnation of Ishtar, the goddess of war. In the meantime, the Hittite army led by Kail Mursili fell at breakneck speed into the territory of the Mitanni kingdom, and Kail and Mattiwaza finally came to a confrontation. However, Matti Waza took Yuri as a hostage and temporarily left the front line to regroup. Mattiwaza, with Yuri as his hostage, is touched by the love of Nadia, who defended herself against the attack of the Hittite soldiers who suddenly appeared, and decides to give up the lands of the Mitanni Kingdom to Kail and live the rest of his life peacefully with Nadia. Yuri returns to the Hittite Empire, but her feelings for Kail are growing as the ceremony to return to Japan is about to take place. Kail, on the other hand, is sorry to say goodbye to Yuri, but he is unable to keep her from leaving, and a difference begins to appear between the two of them. Then, a proposal of marriage between Kail and Ankesename, an Egyptian princess, comes up.
Volume 5
  • Zananza Hattusili, who is to marry the Egyptian princess Ankesename instead of Kail Mursili, begins working with Yuri Suzuki, who offers to accompany her to Egypt. On the way, Zananza loses his life due to a betrayal by Nakia's men, and Yuri also gets an arrow in her back and nearly dies. Yuri, however, returns to the Hittite Empire with the help of Usel Ramses, who happens to be passing by. In the Hittite Empire, there is a row over the murder of Zananza by an Egyptian, but Yuri proves Egypt's innocence in front of Kail, Nakia, and the Hittite soldiers, and the situation is calmed down. Meanwhile, an epidemic of seven-day fever breaks out in the Hittite Empire, and Nakia's reputation only grows as a result of the clean nursing facilities she has built. Nakia also creates a fake Ursula, who is arrogant and extravagant, and Yuri's bad reputation spreads throughout the country. Yuri goes to Ursula's mansion to stop Ursula's arrogance, but her aide accuses Yuri of not being Kail's chambermaid and asks her to work as a maid at a facility for the people of Nanokatsu, which Nakia supports.
Volume 6
  • Suspicious of the behavior of a merchant who frequents the royal palace and is close to Nakia, Ursula obtains the poison medicine the merchant had in his possession. Yuri Suzuki learns of Nakia's plan to murder the emperor with the poison, and with the help of Judah Haspasulpi, tries to foil the plan, but Nakia's trickery makes him the culprit of the emperor's murder. Yuri was released from custody by the testimony of Judah, with whom she had been working, but Nakia put a curse on Judah and made him testify in the Senate that Yuri was the murderer. As a result, Yuri was forced to temporarily hide in the village of the Hatti tribe, the hometown of Hadi and his family. At the same time, in the Hittite Empire, Kail Murshiri confronts the Senate to find out the real culprit behind the murder of the emperor. He had Güzel, the daughter of a nobleman who had testified that she was pregnant with Kail's child, spit out the cursed water and accuse Judah of being under some kind of curse, demanding that Nakia temporarily hand Judah over to him. Nakia, however, threatens Kail with an all-out war with his native Babylonia if he doubts her more than necessary.
Volume 7
  • Yuri Suzuki, who was hiding in a Hatti village, was trapped by Nakia's private army but was saved by the help of Usel Ramses. Ramses, however, kidnapped Yuri in Egypt to make her his wife. To save Yuri, Ursula confesses to the Senate that she murdered the emperor, and is executed. Furthermore, to protect Nakia, Urhi Sharma also commits suicide, and Yuri weeps. Then, Kail Murshiri ascends to the throne as the new emperor. Yuri participates in the coronation ceremony and declares that she will return to Japan in half a month, and although she cannot become a full queen, she will send her blessings to Kail as an incarnation of Ishtar, the goddess of war. Meanwhile, the Hittite Empire is suddenly invaded by the neighboring small country of Arzawa and is also attacked by Egypt at the same time. Yuri, who suspects that there may be spies in the Hittite Empire, succeeds in exposing the traitors, but the imprisoned spies are all poisoned to death by someone. Yuri realizes that Nakia has not given up on her plan to unseat Kail and make Judah Haspasulupi the emperor, and she moves to protect Kail.
Volume 8
  • With less than half a month to go before the ceremony to return to Japan, Yuri Suzuki decides to devote herself to Kail Mursili to the end and succeeds in establishing friendly relations with Arzawa. However, when Yuri hears that the fountain used for the ceremony will be suddenly torn down by Nakia's order, she strongly wishes to return to her own world and returns to Hattusa, the city where the fountain is located. On her way there, however, Yuri hears that Kail was injured in an attack by the Egyptian army's Usel Ramses, and decides to live with Kail in the Hittite Empire, and rushes to his side. The Hittite army, whose morale was boosted by Yuri's appearance, won the first battle against the Egyptian army. Yuri loses the means to return to Japan, but Kail tells Yuri that he will not hold back any longer and tells her everything about his love for her, and they have physical relations for the first time. Yuri begs Kail to allow her to have only a concubine, even though she cannot become a full princess because of her lack of status. Hearing her words, Kail decides that he will definitely make Yuri a queen and begins to think about what he should do to achieve this. Meanwhile, Nakia gathers together the princesses who are candidates for the queen's concubine and concubines, and Yuri is caught up in a battle between the women in the inner palace.
Volume 9
  • When Yuri Suzuki arrived at Kail Mursili's bedchamber, she found a scorpion planted in the bed. Yuri was outraged that Kail could have been harmed and scolded the candidates for the regular princess and side chamberlains. This stopped the harassment of Yuri, but now there was an incident in which the princesses of the rear court were murdered. For a time, Yuri was suspected because she happened to be at the scene, but since the murders occurred while Yuri's activities were restricted, the four princesses living in the rear palace were suspected of the murderers. Yuri discovers that Princess Certo was moved by Nakia's curse, but she is pushed off a high place by the excited Princess Certo. Yuri is saved by Rusafa, but Rusafa is also being manipulated by Nakia, who restrains Yuri. Yuri is then confronted by Ulhi Sharma, who had supposedly committed suicide. Yuri is imprisoned by Rusafa and Urhi but is rescued by Kash and others. Il Bani then stages Yuri, who was supposed to have disappeared, to come out of the fountain, and the people, seeing this, begin to pray to Yuri as an incarnation of Ishtar, the goddess of war. The people then began to cheer that Yuri was the only one who could be the rightful wife of Kairu.
Volume 10
  • Within the Hittite Empire, there are growing calls for Yuri Suzuki to be made a full consort of Kail Mursili, but the situation remains difficult because Yuri does not have the appropriate status. During a discussion in the Senate, Nakia insists that there would be no problem if Yuri were to become the Secretary of the Imperial Guard (the head of the Imperial Guard). Yuri becomes the first female Secretary of the Kingsguard to become Kail's official consort. Kail appoints Rusafa, whom he trusts, as Yuri's assistant, but Rusafa is accused of rape by Nakia, who wants Yuri to lose her life during the war and is effectively sentenced to extreme punishment. However, thanks to Yuri's tact, Rusafa is now free to act as Yuri's assistant as before. The Hittite army led by Yuri and Kail then set out for war against Egypt. First, they arrive in Ugarit, a friendly country of the Hittite Empire, but the Ugarit King has been brainwashed into believing that his beloved daughter was killed by the Hittite Empire due to Nakia's curse. Yuri struggles to regain King Ugarit's trust, but she is captured and taken away by the Egyptian army's Usel Ramses, who has secretly invaded the country. On the way, Yuri realizes that she is pregnant with Kail's child.
Volume 11
  • Yuri Suzuki is pregnant with Kail Murshiri's child and is living a peaceful life in the rear palace, away from the position of Kingsguard Commissioner (the head of the Imperial Guard). Yuri and Kail, who felt threatened that their child might be targeted by Nakia at any time, planned to keep the pregnancy a secret from everyone except those close to them, but Nakia and Ulhi Sharma's trickery made the public aware of the pregnancy. Kail decides to isolate Yuri in Karkemish, a major city in the Hittite Empire, while he is away at war. However, when Yuri boards the ship to go to Carchemish, she is thrown overboard due to the treachery of the ship's crew. Rusafa jumps into the sea to save Yuri, and they are rescued by the Egyptian army as they are drifting in the sea. Rusafa lies that he is a merchant from Ugarit and Yuri is his pregnant sister, and hides in the Egyptian army. Meanwhile, Kail is disturbed to hear that Yuri and Rusafa are lost at sea, and for the first time, he retreats in front of the Egyptian army. Meanwhile, Yuri is nursed in Egypt, but her child is miscarried. Also, Usel Ramses soon discovers Rusafa's true identity and finds Yuri lying on a sickbed.
Volume 12
  • Yuri Suzuki and Rusafa, who are sheltered by Usel Ramses in Egypt, learn that there is a spy in the Hittite Imperial Army who is leaking information to Egypt. To quickly inform Kail Mursili of this fact, Yuri lets only Rusafa escape. Meanwhile, Ramses, who wants to fight Kail on fair terms, turns a blind eye to the situation. Rusafa returns to the side of the Hittite Empire and suspects that Nefertiti, the Empress of Egypt, is in communication with Nakia. Kail and his team begin to gather evidence that, if she is indeed in contact with Nakia, they will be able to bring Nakia down. Yuri asks Ramses to meet Nefertiti to find out what kind of person she is. Ramses takes the liberty of arranging a meeting between Yuri and Nefertiti under the guise of greeting Yuri as a marriage partner. Yuri learns that the relationship between Ramses and Nefertiti is not good. Then, disguised as civilians, Il Bani and his men enter Egypt and not only reunite with Yuri but also invite Ramses to join forces with Kail to unseat Nefertiti.
Volume 13
  • Ramses is detained for a crime he did not commit by Nefertiti, who does not take kindly to the presence of Ussher Ramses. To rescue Ramses, Yuri Suzuki takes advantage of the public discontent with Nefertiti that is simmering in Egypt, and incites the people to organize a rebel army against the government. As a result, Nefertiti is defeated and Ramses is freed. Yuri also obtains a decisive letter that connects Nefertiti and Nakia. Yuri attempts to return to the expedition of Kairu Mursili, but Taharka, the chief of the rebel army, who is angry that Yuri has been taken advantage of, starts a pursuit for Yuri's life. Taharka is chastised by Il Bani and his men, but it does not end well for Yuri. Yuri then heads for Ugarit, a friendly country of the Hittite Empire, to be reunited with Kail. There, Yuri tells Kail that she has miscarried her child and bursts into tears. Meanwhile, now that Nefertiti has been disgraced, the Egyptian army is gaining more momentum to invade the Hittite Empire, and they come toward the Hittite army led by Kail with 20,000 soldiers in tow. With Mattiwaza at his side, Kail began preparations to intercept the Egyptian army.
Volume 14
  • Finally, the battle between the Hittite army led by Kail Mursili and the Egyptian army led by King Horemheb of Egypt began. While Yuri Suzuki also commanded the soldiers on the battlefield, Kail and Usel Ramses, who had a history with each other, left the front lines to fight to the death in a confrontation. Meanwhile, the Hittite army has lost the presence of Kail from the front lines, but Yuri successfully takes command, and the Hittite army succeeds in bringing about peace with Horemheb. The Hittite Empire claimed only reparations from Egypt, and Kail never fought Egypt again. The Hittite Empire again called for Yuri, who had performed brilliantly in the war, to be made the rightful wife of Kail. Meanwhile, Il Bani succeeded in capturing Urhi Sharma, a loyal subordinate of Nakia who had been complicit in the affair with Nefertiti and other incidents that harmed Yuri. Yuri tried to persuade Urhi that he would not be put to death if he confessed the truth that Nakia had instructed him to do so, but Urhi remained silent. Meanwhile, Yuri hears a rumor that Ulhi may be the real father of Judah Haspasurupi.
Volume 15
  • At last, Yuri Suzuki was chosen to become the Queen of Khair Mursiri, and the wedding ceremony was to take place. Meanwhile, Urhi Sharma is taken into custody by Il Bani, but thanks to the power of Nakia's curse, she succeeds in escaping from her prison and escapes through the royal palace while killing people. Meanwhile, Nakia was being fiercely criticized by the Senate for her illicit affair with Nefertiti, for a series of incidents in which she harmed Yuri, for her alleged involvement in the murder of the former emperor, and for her suspicion that Ulhi might be the father of Judah Haspasurupi. Ulhi appears and tells him that Judas is not his child because he is not capable of being a man. Furthermore, Ulhi confesses that he alone harmed Yuri and killed the former emperor, and finally, he embraces Nakia and commits suicide. Nakia is not acquitted, however, and is imprisoned for the rest of her life in a temple far from the royal palace, effectively losing her position. Nakia, however, uses her last ounce of strength to brainwash her subordinates with the power of a curse and formulate a plan to force Yuri's return to Japan. Kail realizes the plan and decides to protect Yuri from Nakia no matter what.
Volume 16
  • Nakia uses her curse to manipulate the water and pulls Yuri Suzuki, who is bathing for her wedding ceremony, into the whirlpool, attempting to return her to Japan. Yuri is pulled out of the whirlpool by Kail Mursili, Judah Haspasulupi, and Rusafa, but Nakia stabs Rusafa with a knife. Rusafa leaves this world, unable to see Yuri as a full queen, but with a look of satisfaction on his face. Angered by Nakia's arrogance, Judah announces that he will renounce his claim to the throne forever. Nakia is relieved to see her son grow up, and this time he is driven away to a town on the edge of the Hittite empire without resistance. Yuri thanks Nakia for summoning him to this world. Kail then proposes to Yuri once again.

Historically speaking, Yuri is most likely based on Puduhepa, the priestess of Ishtar who married King Hattusili III. She has been referred to as "one of the most influential women known from the Ancient Near East." She played an important role in diplomacy with Egypt and was a co-signatory in the Ulmi-Teshub treaty.

Abilities[]

"I only have one wish. For my lover, who is also the king of the Hittite Empire. In his name, I need to conquer Arzarawa without bloodshed. This is the only thing I can do to help him before I go back to Japan. For a man I love deeply."

Yuri Suzuki

She has a straightforward personality and will not listen once you start talking to her. She is insensitive to love and romance. She is good at physical education, but not so good at history. She began training so that she would not be a hindrance to Kail, and through this training, she became an expert in swordsmanship and horsemanship, she held a golden sword that was given by Kail. For unknown reasons, Yuri can understand the language of the Hittite empire (Anatolian languages WP) even the beginning of the series. With his strong sense of justice, athleticism, and a modern sense of humor, she has earned the support and loyalty of the people and soldiers for his fairness and cheerfulness, regardless of status, even though he does not overlook wrongdoing. Understanding Kail's ideals and learning his wiles up close, he has been able to achieve many successes on the battlefield by using strategies that minimize casualties.

Empress Yuri Ishtar

Empress Hittite Yuri Ishtar

As she possesses knowledge far greater than any woman of the time (such as recognition of iron, knowledge of 20th-century hygiene, and famous war strategies), and often seems to find herself in situations that "prove" she is Ishtar, she is considered to have divine powers and is thought by most to be the living incarnation of the goddess of love and war, Ishtar.

She was summoned to the Hittites by Nakia as a substitute for a curse. At first, she is a spur-of-the-moment decision by Kail to save him from Nakia and is only a nominal sidekick, but she is revered as Ishtar for her many accomplishments, and as she and Kail face various difficulties, they become irreplaceable partners in both their private and public lives. However, she has been unable to break her longing for Japan, and with the thought that she will return one day, she intends to devote herself to playing the role of Ishtar, hoping to repay her beloved Kail, at least until she returns home.

Her semi-short hair is frizzy and full, and she is slender and petite. She lacks self-confidence in her appearance, and her everyday clothes, which emphasize ease of movement, are light, ancient boy's clothes, such as Tito's hand-me-downs, and she is often not treated as a woman. She often does not feel treated as a woman. She places more importance on herself as Ishtar than on her chambermaid, and despite her reputation as a well-dressed woman, she rarely goes to official functions dressed in a feminine manner. Despite this, Yuri is insecure and a tomboy; she prefers to dress in men's clothing for practicality, much to the consternation and dismay of her handmaids. The general opinion holds that she is "not strikingly beautiful" and "possesses little womanly charm" (although through the perseverance of her handmaids, she has sometimes been shown to be transformed into a stunning beauty).

Animal Companion
Aslan (アスラン)
Yuri's black war horse, whom only Yuri can ride or control. (In volume 13, Aslan is referred to as a "she," which may - or may not - be different from the original translation.) It was Yuri's favorite horse and was raised by the people of the religious city of Alinna to be presented to King Suppililiuma I. However, it had a rough temperament and was unruly. However, it is too rough and unruly to handle and is given to Yuri after he successfully rides it in a battle with the Kashuga tribe. In the mythology surrounding her, Ishtar as a goddess is said to have ridden a lion into battle, and Yuri is often depicted as such since in the Turkish language Aslan means "lion".
Shimshek (シムシェク)
Yuri's hawk, raised by her from a chick. He is usually kept in a wicker basket when not out. Shimshek used to deliver messages to Yuri and even scout opponents.

The jewel Mattiwaza wears on his forehead is a memento of his love for his Prince Mattiwaza's sister, and this memento is passed on to Yuri, who wears it around her neck for much of the rest of the series. For unknown reasons, the jewel has given to Yuri a luck blessing. After being given the Jewel to Yuri, it always saves and survives any certain death in the series.

She is fond of the iron dagger given to her by Talos and the black horse Aslan, a gift from the mayor of Alinna (Hazanne). She also wears a long choker made of black glass, which was given to her by the Black Prince, and which has become a trademark of hers. However, her natural charm, goodness, and selflessness win her the undying affection and loyalty of many people, both Hittites and their enemies.
