Synopsis[]
Yggdrasil is a virtual reality game renowned for the freedom it offers its players. After a simple tutorial, players are left to explore the world and can customize anything and everything, from their classes to their weapons. However, in the year 2138, the game sees its final hours as its servers shut down at midnight.
Momonga, a devoted player of Yggdrasil, decides to spend the game's last hours inside his guild, Ainz Ooal Gown. Strangely, at the stroke of midnight, the game does not log him out. Instead, Momonga finds himself transported to another world, one that is seemingly identical to that of Yggdrasil. Facing an already abnormal situation, he discovers that the NPCs have gained sentience.
Trapped in his avatar's skeletal body and desperate to uncover the cause of his predicament and find other players like him, Momonga sets out to take control of the new world with the help of his loyal subjects.

Character[]
The main character of this work. In the real world, he was a dull office worker named "Suzuki Satoru" (high school graduate in the web version, elementary school graduate in the book version). Since he was an Overlord, the pinnacle of the undead race in the game era, he is revered as a "transcendent" or "demon king" by those who know his existence, coupled with his mighty power. In the real world, he seems to be alone in the world without family, friends, or lovers (specifically, his mother died from overwork), and due to his own circumstances, he was transferred to another world. Even after realizing this, he is not obsessed with returning to the real world. On the other hand, he is obsessed with Nazarick and his guild members, who were his place and companions, and that is one of the principles of his behavior.
During the game era, he played in VR online game called Momonga, but after transferring, he named himself the name of the guild "Ainz Ooal Gown", in which he was the head of organized opinions. This means that he, who is the only one remaining, will carry all the members who are no longer with him, and that "By making the name of 'Ainz Ooal Gown' widely known, he may be transferred to another world other than himself." This is because he intended to find out the players of Yggdrasil. He basically speaks "Watashi/I" in the first person, but changes to "ore" when he speaks as "Suzuki Satoru" in monologues or when he gets angry.
He usually has a gentle personality and does not like useless killing, and will spare the lives of those who are in a dying position if it is useful. This is partly due to the fact that he is a subordinate of his, but there is also the aspect that he still has the spirit of a human being. Due to the undead transformation, there is no expression, and the ups and downs of emotions are suppressed. In addition, there are few "human race" in Nazarick NPC, and there are many people who "hate people", so it is difficult to appease them who expose their hostility and murderous intent toward humans. On the other hand, if it leads to Nazarick's profit, he will not hesitate to mass murder. Even if his subordinates call him a "lower life forms", he shows a certain amount of sympathy in return for the kindness he received, is that of a parent who cares about their children, and when they hurt the pride of them and Nazarick, they reveal their rage and retaliate severely.

These dualities are said to be due to the loss of most of the spirit of the time when it was a human due to the transformation into an undead, which caused discontinuation of emotions for people other than those with whom it interacted. It is a sense of degree. For that reason, in the book version, he himself goes to the front lines and has friendships with various people and shows a certain degree of humanity, while in the web version he sits in Nazarick and doesn't move, his indifference to people being trampled is more pronounced.
After transferring to another world, when he discovered that the residents of the "Human Village", Carne Village, were being attacked by soldiers disguised as Baharuth Imperial Knights through the magic item "Remote Vision Mirror", at first Although he was about to abandon him, he remembered the time when he was rescued by Sebas "creator", Touch Me, and in order to repay him and grasp his own fighting ability, he rescued the villagers. It was also around this time that he changed his own name from "Momonga" to "Ainz Ooal Gown". When Ainz travels incognito as an adventurer, he uses the alias Momon the Dark Hero.
Ain's Theme Ost: | ─ Arrival Of The Undead King
Abilities[]
"I will announce the goal for everyone to turn Ainz Ooal Gown into an eternal legend. If there are many heroes, then we will replace them all. Let the entire world know that Ainz Ooal Gown is the true hero!"
― Ainz announcing his goals, setting all of Nazarick into motion.
During his gaming days, he was focused on character creation, so he emphasized the atmosphere of a magician as part of role-playing rather than pure fighting ability. For this reason, even in the game age, without having the necessary countermeasure skills, the direct magic attack power was inferior to that of professionals. Yggdrasil was mid-upper-upper-lower-class strength if the equipment wasn't taken into account. He seems to have a lot of experience as a player, and in the match against Shalltear, he overwhelmed him with his tactics even though he was at a disadvantage due to his specs and poor compatibility. Therefore, I am aware that I am not good at domestic affairs. Albedo and Demiurge manage Nazarick, but to his subordinates, he must act as an omniscient and omnipotent absolute being, and his weakness is that he cannot convey what he still does not understand.
It looks like a skeleton on the outside, but reddish-black light dwells in the depths of its eye sockets, and there is a pulsating reddish-black spherical jewel that is a world-class item below the part that corresponds to its heart. In the web version, it is not a complete skeleton, but a thin skin. As he has the form of an Elder Lich, he doesn't need to eat or sleep, and can't be poisoned or killed by conventional means, along with his emotions and empathy being suppressed, Ainz remembers having a "heart" and thus keeps his humanity in practice. Because of his formerly high level in YGGDRASIL, he can easily overpower even the strongest of magic casters in the New World; and while he lacks the skills of natural warriors, he compensates for it with raw strength. Over time, he has learned how to improve in fighting with physical weapons, but his greatest asset remains his strength. Ainz also has access to a wide variety of instant death and summoning spells which, though ineffective against fellow players, work very well against the inhabitants of the New World. He also has an array of items he purchased with real money back in YGGDRASIL, which give him abilities ranging from summoning extremely high-level items (most of which belong to his guildmates) from the Guild's bank to instantly cast a spell that usually has a long casting time.
The staff he carries is a guild weapon called the 「Staff of Ainz Oool Gown」, and by adding seven Sacred Treasure-class jewels to the Sacred Treasure-class wand weapon in the shape of seven intertwined snakes. It possesses stats comparable to world-class items and various skills, including an automatic engagement system. He usually carries a replica made during the prototype stage. In creating this wand, the cooperation and efforts of everyone in the guild, as well as the hardships and troubles in the real world, are mixed with joys and sorrows, and Momonga has a fondness for this wand. If the guild master were to start equipping this type of weapon, it grants that user enhancement over their own racial skills. For instance, once equipped by Ainz, it can strengthened the effects of Despair Auras, a racial skill to the point wherein which, this staff's power is able to affect even level 100 NPCs. While so, this guild weapon too could increase his stats to higher numbers.
On the other hand, it also grants the guild master the rights, privileges, and accessibility to the various parts and functions within the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Given its authority, it can even override certain restricted settings or access and then re-edit them like the Custom NPCs' backstories.
Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown's most potent feature is its automatic engagement system. In combat, Ainz can initiate it to undergo automatic interception mode. After the staff obeyed his order, it will begin moving on its own independently from Ainz to attack his enemies. Sharing a mental bond with Ainz, the staff would automatically select the most appropriate spells to utilize and cast on his foes without requiring himself to perform the casting. This staff can read and understand Ainz's thoughts or way of thinking, knowing full well what he is asking for and does it accordingly without waiting for the user's command.
List of Active Spells
|
The maximum amount of spells a level 100 player could learn was 300. However, Ainz used his special ability "Dark Wisdom" to learn and memorize 718 different spells. Even those spells he had not learned could still become a weapon to read his opponents’ strengths, once Ainz knew of them. As part of Ainz Ooal Gown, he was easily ranked in the top five amongst his guild members when it came to magical knowledge.
Though his class and abilities are not suitable for PvP, Ainz Ooal Gown was a PvP/PKER guild in YGGDRASIL, proving he was well versed in fights and ambushes, which has allowed him to score a win from players optimized in PvP many times. His chances of victory in PvP combat were quite high. Still, Ainz tended to lose against players who had flawless builds. Despite his shortcomings, Ainz was confident enough that he wouldn't be so easily defeated by someone who only relied on high stats. Moreover, he was adept with useful information imparted from his fellow guild mate, Punitto Moe in regard to fighting players. Eventually, these skills and knowledge became vital to him once he was in the New World due to his tactical experience now making him a competent military leader or advisor. This was apparent when both Neia Baraja and Gustav Montagnés felt genuinely surprised and impressed by Ainz's military competence and skills in guerrilla warfare and strategy that they ultimately sought him out for advise. For instance, he was able to assist them in their military campaign to reclaim their occupied lands and kingdom. This in turn, caused someone like Neia to develop a genuine sense of respect, admiration and even loyalty to the Sorcerer King.
Because of going for the Overlord race class, he had to take a bit of an RPG approach to the game by focusing on classes and skills that were specifically involved with death magic. This meant that he did not focus much on pure combat magic as much as other magic casters. Some did indicate that he was actually weaker than them in actual combat. In the game, Ainz could not be counted as the greatest among the players of YGGDRASIL.
Meanwhile, there were other players out there who were better than he was in PvP, and the odds of his survival against stronger players than himself were not that good. Although he won PvP battles with surprising regularity, that was only after forfeiting the first round of each match. Since he was very skilled at using the information he had gathered, Ainz’s technical skills were unexpectedly high. Conversely, if he fought an opponent he had never encountered before, his chances of defeat would also be very high. Ainz was fully aware of his abilities and was deeply grateful if he did not encounter a powerful enemy that he knew nothing about beforehand.
During his times in YGGDRASIL, Ainz had spent at least a year memorizing every single position of the spellcasting console that contained each one of his spells. Ainz always felt that his good PVP track record was due to his own practical diligence over the matter.

Furthermore, Ainz belonged in the category of "Others." To the guild, Ainz Ooal Gown, "Others" were players with challenging classes who could adapt to many different circumstances. Ainz used the drops from PKing — the corpses of other players — to learn many different spells. Because of that, he was typically placed in this position during dungeon raids. However, he was not given this position because he could use many different spells, but because he could use suitable spells for the appropriate situation. Because he had to handle this difficult task, Ainz's priority is focus on dealing with the corpses from PKing, as a sign of his comrades’ faith in his abilities regarding that area of expertise.In the New World, because Ainz doesn't underestimate his opponents and is cautious about them, he tends to plan out the fight before readily engaging them in combat. Ainz will make steady preparations first and tends to take any advantage he can in order to be one step ahead of his opponent. This includes gathering cash items, using his guild members' equipment, or buffing himself up before launching an attack on Shalltear Bloodfallen. As an arcane magic caster, Ainz is already a strategist and tactician who can hold his own in battle, even against a warrior. This is shown when he defeats Shalltear, who happens to be a hard counter to his necromancy and summoning skills. If Ainz is placed in a situation where he has to prepare his equipment for battle, after considering his opponents’ abilities and skills and planning out his tactics, he will be quite confident in his ability to select the appropriate set of gears and items to best combat the foe he is facing.

For a pure arcane magic caster such as Ainz, his selection of weapons are very limited, largely to staves, daggers, and the like. Although Ainz cannot use certain weapons due to his class restrictions, there are actually possible ways to bypass such setbacks. Particularly, items like a long-sword weapon imbued with some sort of magic which can waive that class restriction and let him use it. Moreover, he makes modifications out of New World items, such as the elemental weapon Frost Pain to use its spell 'Icy Burst.' Simultaneously, while another spell like 'Perfect Warrior' is still-in-effect, he is unable to use the rest of his other remaining spells. In that form, he is also able to waive class restrictions, enabling him to equip items without suffering under any class penalties whatsoever.
On the other hand, Ainz can use the mental bond with his summoned monster for orders to command them. Likewise, Ainz is able to send out another type of mental command to his prototype staff, which is used to initiate the weapon's ability for offensive means in battle. Similar to natives like Clementine in the New World, he is capable of releasing 'Fireball' or acid-type element spells from a weapon such as the stilettos, but only if magic casters like Fluder Paradyne are to cast it with their own magic. Also, Ainz can even use an unknown skill to temporarily boost his 1st-tier spells to the equivalent of 10th-tier spells.

Additionally, Ainz states that he has an anti-scrying offensive barrier activated against divination magic, preventing enemies like the Sunlight Scripture from being observed by their higher-ups. With the barrier in use, he can also link another higher-tier attack spell of his own kind like a widened Explosion back to the user of divination magic from where they are located at. Aside from that, his magic resistance can completely negate the effects of low to mid-tier spells, regardless of how powerful their casters are.
"There was no need for me to fight someone of your level seriously. In other words, you weren’t even an enemy worthy of using magic on."
― Ainz
In direct close combat, Ainz's strength stems from his prior knowledge and battle experience during his times in YGGDRASIL, using it to fend off the New World natives and their Martial Arts skills. Yet at the same time, he cultivates and gains new knowledge plus experience based on his encounters with Gazef Stronoff and Clementine since then as a front-line fighter. Currently, he has been having ongoing training under Cocytus as a warrior then putting that practice to the test through fighting the workers. Such efforts are also shown during Ainz's battle against the Martial Lord by including the usage of his other abilities like Despair Auras or Negative Touch. During his fight against Buser, Ainz displays some degree of skills by using a halberd and planning a feint attack.
SUPER-TIER MAGIC
| ||
---|---|---|
Creation: It is a super-tier spell that can change the terrain itself. In YGGDRASIL, it was used to guard against the heat of volcanoes or the cold of freezing lands. According to Ainz's experiment, it has an amazingly large area of effect and can cover the entire 8th Floor inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick. | ||
Fallen Down: Upon casting the super-tier spell, Ainz calls upon a huge pillar of blue light from the sky that will burn so bright and hot that it will appear like the whole world has turned white. After a few seconds, it will leave behind an area burned to a cinder, devoid of life. This spell deals massive damage, especially to an undead-type enemy.
| ||
Iä Shub-Niggurath: Ainz uses this super-tier spell to summon a black cyclone that instantly kills everything in its field of range. This spell inflicts an instant-death effect, and it is practically useless against the undead, golems, and other beings which have no life. While it is effective against living players and enemies, it is hard to imagine any level 100 players not having immunity to instant death. Additionally, the fallen victims caught in the cyclone are also sacrificed in order to summon monsters over level 90 known as "Dark Young." The number of summoned Dark Youngs is proportional to the total number of sacrifices.
|
||
Wish Upon A Star: A super-tier spell that consumes the user's experience points to grant a wish or more. Ainz can gain access to it by using a special item but states that he has also learned it. In the New World, when casting the super-tier spell, it feels as though new information is being entered into his mind and that they worked differently from YGGDRASIL.
Although it still expends experience points, [Wish Upon A Star] is now a type of super-tier spell that can make the impossible possible. However, it cannot overcome the powerful effects of World Items. | ||
Pantheon: Once cast, this super-tier spell allows Ainz to summon forth six levels 80, "Cherubims Gate Keeper" with holy-type magic under his full command.![]() | ||
SPECIAL SKILL
| ||
The Goal of All Life is Death: This special skill is one of Ainz's most powerful abilities and comes from the maximum level (5) in Eclipse. Eclipse is one of the hardest classes to get because it requires an Overlord with spells specialized in necromancy and instant death-type magic. The Eclipse class lets the user become a true lord of death, a life-consuming Eclipse. It strengthens the instant death effect of magic and skills to the point of bypassing any immunity or resistance and killing their targets after a certain amount of time has passed. Ainz uses this special skill with the (Widen Magic) Cry of the Banshee,' and it kills everything in 100 meters. The cool-down of this special skill is a 100 hours duration. It's not possible to resist death spells enhanced by this special skill unless one uses a resurrection effect on themselves within 12 seconds. This special skill is considered to be the trump card of the Eclipse class. In the Overlord Bonus Volume, more than 400,000 zombies, and quite possibly more than a million of them shielding Cure Elim Los Malvar died as a result of this special class skill, [The Goal of All Life is Death], which buffed [Iä Shub-Niggurath].
| ||
Unnamed Special Skill: Through using a special skill, Ainz is capable of turning corpses into undead. The corpses will either turn into the kind of undead such as zombies or skeletons. However, the stronger the physical body of that corpse, the more powerful the zombie becomes. One famous example is Zombie Dragons.

Ainz summons the Floor Guardians (except Gargantua and Victim) and Pleiades Combat Maids and shows them the item "Total Maniac-Modified", which Yuri points out has the power to destroy the world. Upon activation, Shalltear becomes a self-loathing person, Cocytus starts saying perverted things openly, Demiurge starts adding weird random words to his sentences, and Aura and Mare act more childishly. Ainz states that the item has an effect that makes them open their heart and agrees with Demiurge's explanation that this is an experiment to show how they act when affected by a mental condition.
Ainz orders the Pleiades to help him to watch over the Guardians, who have been affected by the "Total Maniac-Modified". Narberal points out that it has no effects on the Pleiades Maids for some reason. When Ainz orders them to act casually, he senses that Yuri is still traumatized from last time. He also points out that Sebas was not exposed last time, and nothing happened to him. Lupusregina states that Sebas' heart may have been in chaos, but he is desperately trying to hold himself together, though the others doubt it. Ainz interviews Shalltear in his room, accompanied by CZ and (uninvited) Albedo. Shalltear and Albedo start bickering. When asked about the reason they are always fighting, Shalltear states that the main reason is about their chest size, since all men think that "big breasts are justice". Ainz denies this, and states that some people like flat chests too, and stuttered "hinnu" instead of "hinyuu" (flat-chested), though the others think that the term is cute. Then Ainz is asked the question: does he like big breasts or small breasts? To avoid any problems, Ainz ends the segment. Ainz interviews Aura, Mare and Cocytus, accompanied by Entoma. Ainz notes that Aura has not changed much. Aura states it is because she is always honest with herself. Cocytus keeps spouting perverted delusions (similar to the usual Albedo), so Ainz asks him to be silent, which makes him cry. In an attempt to cheer him, Entoma takes out a cockroach, which frightens Cocytus. Mare catches the cockroach and the siblings roast it. Entoma points out that cockroach is more delicious eaten raw and starts eating. In the midst of the chaos, Mare asks Ainz about the person he likes, shocking him. Albedo feels like she was called by Ainz, and Lupusregina jokes that it is a skill that big breasted people have, shocking Shalltear. Ainz asks them what they like the most, and Aura, Mare and Entoma all answers "Lord Ainz", but Cocytus almost says "breasts", though he corrects his answer before he spouts it out. Ainz interviews Demiurge and Sebas, accompanied by Entoma and Solution. Demiurge still adds random words to his sentences. Sebas tries to restrain himself from acting wildly. He gets the chance to do so when Demiurge says that Ainz asked them to act casually, but Solution states that the Sebas now is his true self, so he has no option but to restrain himself and act like everything is normal. Solution suddenly becomes plump, shocking Sebas (who screams), and in return shocking Ainz (whose emotion gets regulated). Ainz states that Solution took a challenge to eat 10 humans at once, causing her to get fat. Yuri, Lupusregina and Narberal arrive in the Treasure Room. She states that the "Total Maniac-Modified" is different from the one she saw last time, and claims that it was made by Pandora's Actor, because the puppet's face on the item looks exactly like Pandora's real face. Demiurge joins the talk, and reveals that the item has no effect on him, and him talking weirdly is just an act. Pandora explains that since making an item that affect personality is hard, he had a prototype that turns someone's personality to simple qualities – sexually open, self-loathing, amplifying childish tendencies, in short, changes into any character. It is revealed that Ainz is actually took the prototype, since the prototype and the real item have no differences in shape prior to being used (even Pandora can not tell the differences). In Ainz's room, everything becomes chaotic. In order to cure the effect, Pandora takes out the hammer-looking item "Total Calmness", which cancels the effect of "Total Maniac-Modified". As the leader of the Guardians, Albedo takes charge – Solution and Lupusregina to confront Shalltear; Entoma and CZ to confront Cocytus; Sebas (still affected) to confront Aura and Mare; Yuri and Narberal to guard the door; Demiurge to hit the targets with "Total Calmness" (Albedo assigns herself to guard Ainz, which the latter does not want to tsukkomi). Upon being healed, the affected people forget what happened, and Demiurge lies that the destruction of Ainz's room is caused by Yuri's Flying Head Attack. For safety, Ainz hits Demiurge and Albedo with "Total Calmness" before deciding to do the same thing to himself. Afterwards, Pandora, in an attempt to get screentime, states that it is just a beginning towards more madness (denied by Ainz). Alone in his room, Ainz thinks that they can talk honestly with each other while bathing, and a mind-reading CZ points out it could be a foreshadowing. |

Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom[]
In November 2024, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom earned $1.16 million in its U.S. opening weekend, ranking at #12 in the box office.
Phil Hoad of The Guardian gave the film 3/5 stars, writing, "At least in this instalment, we never see the real-world frame story outside the game, but there’s a fatalistic sense that all this is being decided elsewhere. Coupled with expansive, heroic visual character-work, the film has a classiness that, with a bit more focus, could in future put it in Princess Mononoke territory." Randy Myers of The Mercury News gave it 3/4 stars, writing, "Director Naoyuki Itô obviously relishes classic world-building elements and oversees some rather astonishing visual set pieces. All the staples are there, too: bloody battles, surprising revelations and dormant powers within unlikely sources." IGN's Mike Mamon was more critical, calling the film "more of a footnote to a long-running anime series than it is an entertaining movie experience" and adding, "The arc that inspired the movie receives only a passing mention on the TV show; The Sacred Kingdom's lackluster execution makes that short shrift feel justified." He gave the film a score of 4/10.
