Mashin Hero Wataru (魔神英雄伝ワタル, Mashin Eiyū Den Wataru, lit. 'Magic God Hero Legend Wataru') is a series of Japanese animated films produced by Sunrise. There are works such as TV series, OVA, web animation, radio drama, and novels. Here, I will show a simple view of the world and types of media mixes related to "Mashin Hero Wataru". For details, refer to the corresponding item and "Characters of Mashin Hero Wataru Series".
All stories seem to be connected, but there are parts where the worldview and background settings are intentionally different depending on the director and writer. For example, the anime "Mashin Hero Wataru" is supposed to be a sequel to "1" and "2", and then lead to "Wataru 3", but as a result of the worldview and settings being added later, it is clearly a contradictory completeness. There are also places that are not connected to.

Overview[]
The work "Mashin Hero Wataru" is famous for leaving many epoch-making elements in various aspects of Japanese anime culture. Most of these phenomena were not done intentionally but were a result of the popularity of the work. Below is an overview of that.
One aspect is the incorporation of elements from the RPG (role-playing game) genre, which was popular at the time, into the setting and story structure. The series effectively combines two approaches: one that builds upon each episode and another that features an expansive world view. Different world views are presented at each step, with a major boss appearing after defeating all the mini-bosses, and bonus stages that transport players to different worlds, successfully integrating game elements into the anime, which was perceived as fresh at the time. Additionally, the appealing character designs by Toyo Ashida and the guest character settings in each episode, considering the trends and gags of the broadcast period, effectively expressed the world view. In terms of robots, the proportions of giant robots, such as Gundam, were reduced to a 3-head height level. This became a work that suggested new possibilities for robot anime. This proportion was sometimes seen as gag manga or SD (super-deformed), and it was considered adventurous even for Sunrise, but the popularity of the action sequences where they moved at the same level as tall robots increased. The "Majin Daishugo" series of Plamodels (action models, or models with movement) released by Takara became extremely popular among children, achieving commercial success. This was largely due to the increase in purchasing desire from the immediate availability of toys in stores after the broadcast, the affordability due to lower prices, and the package sizes that were easy to display next to the cash registers in toy stores, which stemmed from the ideas of the original creator, Koji Hiroi. Because of this simultaneous development during the broadcast, it is also said to be a pioneer of media mix.
One aspect of the media mix was the radio drama conducted under the name "Rajimeishon." It started less than a year after the end of the TV series, took a two-year break, and continued for six years, leading to the anime's revival in 1997. Additionally, after the broadcast, it was commercialized under the name "CD Cinema," making it possible for fans who could not listen to the radio or see the visuals to purchase it. At the time of the broadcast, packaging of animations took time, and video products were expensive, coinciding with the beginning of the rental video boom. Following the radio adaptation, the number of radio programs focusing on manga and anime without visual elements rapidly increased, and this has now become standard. Due to this popularity, many character songs were produced, and similar to the songs included in the Kolorchan Pack by Nippon Columbia, several tracks other than the theme song were included in the soundtrack. This became standard, and best albums were released for each series, even leading to the release of karaoke albums. Along with these releases, several karaoke competitions involving fan participation were held by record companies. There are nearly 100 related songs, and in 2014, a complete best album was released.
It is also said to be the trigger for the stage events featuring participating voice actors. At that time, voice actors were considered behind-the-scenes figures in anime, and aside from a few celebrity voice actors, they rarely appeared in public. The event itself originally consisted of free events hosted by anime magazines or for CD purchasers, as well as the karaoke competitions mentioned above, but due to being primarily lottery-based, only a few lucky people could participate. Thus, the decision to charge for participation was made with the hope of allowing many fans to join by securing a large venue, which differs somewhat from the current events that aim for commercialization. However, the participating voice actors, under the belief that "they are paying to see us," practiced rigorously like in concerts and stage performances (this trend was utilized by Hiroi Oji in "Sakura Taisen" leading to its success), making it a pioneering presence in the now-standard practice of stage shows and live performances by voice actors, as well as adaptations of anime and manga into stage productions.
On the other hand, signs of revival in the real robot genre began to emerge, while the SD anime series gradually declined. Additionally, fans who were upset by the revelation that the popular character Toraou was "Shouryuuko brainwashed by Doakudaa" expressed their protests with cries of "He’s so pitiful!" This left Inoue confused, and following his writing of the novelization "Toraou Legend" aimed at exploring his identity, doubts arose about the eternally monotonous style that had been promoted since the project's inception, leading to the progression of serious drama from the middle of "2." Fans who liked robot series and elementary school boys drifted away, while female middle and high school fans surged instead.
Thus, this work, which succeeded through innovative trial and error, followed the concept of "Galatt," which had been proposed four years prior, and its design was repurposed from concurrently produced works like "DraGun," with some staff, including designers, being shared, making it no exception to the prevalent practice of rehashing existing concepts at the time. It can be said that it turned past failures into a springboard for creating a hit work.

Born May 5, 1978. He is 131 cm tall and weighs 27.0 kg. He is a Taurus type B.
Character[]
The story is about a 9-year-old boy named Wataru Ikusabe (戦部 ワタル, Ikusabe Wataru) who is magically transported to a magical realm by a magical dragon named Ryujinmaru (龍神丸, Dragon God Round) - this realm is known as Soukaizan (創界山, Sōkaizan), which he is supposed to save from an evil, magical, demonic ruler.
Wataru Senbe a reincarnation of the legendary savior "Wataru", also a 4th grade elementary school student at Ryujin Elementary School, Wataru is taken to the world of gods called "Shinbukai" by a guardian dragon that appears from a pond called Ryujinike. The evil emperor "Doakdar", who suddenly appeared in the center of the mountain of gods "Soukaizan", ruled over the gods and Sokaisan. Together with Ryujinmaru, who has become a real "Seirei", he sets off on a journey to exterminate Doakuder in order to regain the seven rainbows that symbolize Mt. Sokai.
The series incorporates many elements of RPG games including dungeon levels and quests for magical objects. Soukaizan itself is represented as a series of magical tiered platforms each floating magically above the one beneath it in a rough pyramid shape. In order to progress to the next tier where he will meet the series' ultimate magical villain, the show's heroes must complete some task on the one beneath. In addition to these, he has to defeat the magical ruler of each level along with his many magical henchmen. Each level he completes, rejuvenates one color of the magical gray rainbow over Soukaizan.
In his quest to save the magical realm, Wataru manages to transform a clay sculpture into a somewhat autonomous and small magical Super Robot. He also befriends many of the magical Soukaizan natives, and forms some very strong friendship bonds. The term Sou-kai-zan can be broken down to its three parts: "Sou" (creation), "Kai" (realm, space, world, or universe), and "Zan" (hill or mountain), representing the pyramid shape of the magical world's level.

Abilities[]
Wataru Ikusabe has medium grades in school. His charm points are his bouncy hair and nose. He has a habit of rubbing his nose with his fist, saying, "Say it straight!" He thinks he is cheerful and cheerful and popular in the class, but Toshi says, "He's good, he's in a good mood, and he has a lot of assumptions.
From an early age, he was known only for his physical strength and was a hero at sports days and other events. In his room, he has a rollerskating trophy and a picture of him from that time. His dream is to be a Little League pitcher and an astronaut.
- Hero/Savior Wataru
- "Legendary Savior" originating from "Soukaizan" handed down from "Kanbukai". It wasn't that he could have been anyone, but the name of a boy from the "Senbu Clan" who showed divine power in the battle between the "Demon World" and the "Dark Dragon" that appeared tens of thousands of years ago. Originally, the soul that should have been reincarnated in the "God World" descended to the "Present World" for some reason. The incarnation of the dragon "Majin Ryujinmaru," is also equipped with a mechanism that reacts to the spirit and lineage of the war club, and it is a technique that can be achieved in the previous life when it launches a technique by taking a stance without any preliminary swing.
- With the power of the Rainbow Dragon, he cut off the head of the Dark Dragon with the Sword of the Dragon King, ending the long-standing battle. It is handed down. On the other hand, since the human body cannot sufficiently demonstrate it to walk through the distorted sanctuary of the gods, it must act in the "Costume of a Hero" except in emergencies.

Interpretations[]
The first section of the title's kanji is a pun: the super-deformed mecha of the series are called "Magic Gods" (Kanji: 魔神, Romaji: mashin) - while written with the kanji for "magic" being shortened from "魔法" (mahō) to "魔" (ma) and "god" (神, shin) ("Shin" is one of two spellings for "jin", one of two romaji for "god" - the second romaji is "kami"), "mashin" is also the romaji for the katakana writing of the ordinary English word "machine" (マシン, mashin). The kanji for "legend", 伝説 (densetsu) is shortened to "伝" (den) before being written alongside "hero" (英雄 Eiyū)
Wataru and his friends Shibaraku and Himiko each represent different elements of ancient Japan: Wataru with his magatama and association with dragons represents the pre-Yamato Watari clan. Shibaraku represents samurai. Himiko represents ninja.
