Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta (異世界でチート能力を手にした俺は、現実世界をも無双する ～レベルアップは人生を変えた～, I Got a Cheat Ability in a Different World, and Became Extraordinary Even in the Real World. / I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too)is a Japanese light novel series written by Miku and illustrated by Rein Kuwashima. It began as a web novel that started in the Kakuyomu website in March 2017. It was later acquired by Fujimi Shobo, who have published the series since December 2018 under their Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint.

A manga adaptation illustrated by Kazuomi Minatogawa has been serialized in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki PlayStation Comic Web website since December 2019, with its chapters collected into four tankōbon volumes as of December 2022. An anime television series adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment and animated by Millepensee premiered in April to June 2023. A new anime project has been announced.

Synopsis[]

Yuuya Tenjou has been a bullied boy since the past. He lives in the home of his beloved grandfather while he goes to school. As usual, he receives a harsh bullying, and he takes an extended absence from school to have some time to heal his wounds.

While on this long time of absence, he takes the opportunity to clean his grandfather's house and goes to a room he never went before, where his grandfather kept many different objects that he gathered from his travels around the world. While he was arranging the objects, he found a door not on a wall among the objects.

Out of curiosity he opens this door, what he found on the other side was...

Written by Miku, the series began publication online in the Kakuyomu website on March 25, 2017, under the tentative title Level Up wa Jinsei o Kaeta (レベルアップは人生を変えた). The series was later acquired by Fujimi Shobo, who began publishing the novels with illustrations by Rein Kuwashima starting on December 20, 2018. As of March 2022, ten volumes have been released.

In September 2021, Yen Press announced that they had licensed the novels for English publication.

Yuuya Tenjou is hated by his parents and siblings because of his ugly appearance, and is even bullied by delinquent classmates. He is completely isolated after the death of his only ally, his grandfather.

One day, following his grandfather's will, he helps a girl who is being entangled in delinquents at a convenience store. That night, Yuuya, who was in despair about his life, accidentally discovered a "hidden door" in his house. After opening the hidden door, he finds "mysterious items" and "doors to other worlds" that his grandfather had collected from all over the world.

At the house beyond the door, Yuuya acquires combat skills one after another, and when he defeats the monsters that attack him with the weapon "Zesari", his poor stats level up tremendously. Perhaps because of that, Yuuya, who was attacked by severe pain while he was asleep, turned into a handsome man the next morning. On the other hand, in another world, Rexia von Alcelia, the princess of Alcelia Kingdom, is about to be assassinated, and she is rescued by Yuuya, who happens to be away. This made Lexia fall in love with Yuuya at first sight, and she was desperate to find him.

Personality:
  • Yuuya is an incredibly kind person, he doesn't even hate his old bullies and not even his parents who abandoned him, but he has a serious 'inferiority complex' and suffers every day from it from his interactions with people, he has low self-esteem and his lack of confidence in anything he does, because of his past 14 to 15 years of trauma since his birth.
  • He is quite air-headed and thinks that his superhuman abilities are just the born fruit of his hard exercise routine. Outside of the Demon's Den, Yuuya is perhaps the strongest person in the other world, and his Level Up turns him into a heartthrob whose easily mistaken for a model. When he does realize the extent of the physical changes done to his body, he thinks he looks average, and thanks to his low self-esteem, he thinks his skills are either average or mediocre at best.
  • Even after achieving so much, he'll in the future, he just wants to live a normal life. His adventures in the other world aside, after receiving some encouragement from Miu and the Houjou family, Yuuya wants nothing more than to enjoy his normal life with his friends at Ousei Academy. This is also why he refuses the director of Miu's talent agency since it would just bring him unnecessary drama and trouble. And ultimately, even before his change and despite all of the bullying, he always tried to do the right thing. Even went as far as to defend a girl from a bunch of thugs despite knowing he had no chance, which made most of the girls in the series fall in love with him.

Going up 100 levels in an instant and allocating his stat points causes Yuuya to become tall, muscular, and handsome, to the point that he's mistaken for a professional model by passerby. After he became handsome, there is hardly a page in the manga where a woman in the background isn't blushing at him. However, due to having no self-esteem, he doesn't realize this, such as when two girls were trying to proposition him for sex, he thought they were just trying to scam him.

He also feels depressed when girls flee from him, not realizing they were squealing. Yuuya's muscles are incredibly toned, are small enough to be easily hidden by his school uniform, contributing to his Pretty Boy looks. After he catches Kaede during a mishap at a soccer field, she feels his muscles through his shirt and makes note of how strong and built he is. Yuuya's enhanced physical capabilities come from his experiences in the other world, but they transfer over to his world as well. To everyone around him, he's The Ace and very good at physical activities. Because of Yuuya’s lack of self-esteem, he finds it extremely difficult to consider that other people might like him or that he has redeeming qualities, so his viewpoint tends to downplay how strong he is, or misunderstand the stares of awe and attraction he gets as something else.

Most of Yuuya's fights are this, either because of his high level or the equipment his grandfather seemingly left behind. On his first day in the other world, he managed to one-shot a giant monster with only a spear he got from the storeroom. He instantly reached Level 100 for killing that one monster alone. This only applies to "normal" enemies like Yuuya's fellow humans and is otherwise subverted as he travels deeper into the Demon's Den, where there are much stronger monsters with higher levels and stats than his.

TV Anime[]

In August 2022, it was announced that the novels would be receiving an anime television series adaptation. The series is produced by TMS Entertainment and animated by Millepensee, with Shingo Tanabe directing, Shin Itagaki serving as chief director and supervising the scripts, Hiromi Kimura adapting Rein Kuwashima's character designs for animation and serving as chief animation director, and Akiyuki Tateyama composing the music. It is set to premiere on April 7, 2023, on Tokyo MX and other networks.

The opening theme song is "Gyakuten Geki" (逆転劇, "Turnabout Drama") by Tsukuyomi, while the ending theme song is "Hachimitsu" (ハチミツ, "Honey") by Shikao Suga. Crunchyroll licensed the series, and will be streaming it along with an English dub. Muse Communication licensed the series in Asia-Pacific.

Yūya lives alone in a house he inherited from his grandfather, the only one to treat Yūya kindly. One day he saves a girl, Kaori Hojo, from thugs but is badly beaten in the process. Later, he discovers a secret portal to a cottage in another world which operates like a video game. The cottage comes supplied with powerful weapons, and while experimenting with his skills, a powerful monster appears outside the cottage's magic barrier. From inside the barrier, Yūya kills the monster and immediately gains 100 levels evolving his body, making him tall, muscular and handsome. Using a skill to trade items for Japanese currency, he buys new clothes before returning to Japan for his first day of high school. His former bullies are stunned by his transformation but, along with his jealous siblings, still attempting to continue to bully him. They are interrupted by the arrival of Kaori, who somehow immediately knows who he is.

For having saved her, Kaori's father, chairman of the elite Ousei Academy, is offering Yūya a place at Ousei. His siblings attempt to push Yūya aside, claiming they are better suited to Ousei, but Kaori rejects them as spiteful bullies. Yūya leaves with Kaori, leaving his siblings humiliated and furious. He worries about fitting in, but the chairman assures him Ousei values strength of character over grades, making it easier to hone skills and have fun. As a trial, Yūya attends a science class run by Ms. Sawada, where most female students are smitten with his good looks. Yūya becomes tentative friends with Ryō and Shingo and is overwhelmed by people treating him with actual kindness, so he agrees to transfer to Ousei. Kaori shows him the nearby shopping center, and while sharing snacks, insists they use each other's first names. Many eavesdropping students assume they are on a date, embarrassing Yūya. He decides to return to the other world for fun, but this time encounters a girl named Lexia, whom he rescues from a monster. Unsure what to do, he sneaks away unseen once her guards arrive.

Yūya decides to spend some of his new wealth on clothes. While shopping, he is grabbed by photographer Hikaru as replacement for male celebrity model Shō and takes part in a photo-shoot with professional model Miu, who is drawn to Yūya’s inexperience and charm. Shō abruptly shows up late and forcefully flirts with Miu. When Yūya protests, Shō tries to punch him, only for Yūya to instinctively defeat him. Due to the cameras still recording, Shō is exposed online as a scumbag, destroying his career. Despite enjoying himself, Yūya declines Hikaru’s offer of a modelling contract to focus on his studies, but Hikaru insists on paying him with free designer clothing. In the other world, Princess Lexia of Arselia is determined to thank her anonymous hero and stubbornly returns to the dangerous forest with her guards to find him. Yūya visits the other world and finds Lexia and her guards under attack again, so he rescues them, and Lexia abruptly asks Yūya to marry her. In Japan, Miu’s boss is determined to hire Yūya before other modelling agencies get to him.

After Lexia's sudden proposal, proper introductions are made, and Yūya receives an invitation for an audience with her father, the king of Arselia. However, Reigar, Arselia's first prince, is most displeased an assassination attempt against his half-sister Lexia under his orders was foiled just before she was rescued by Yūya. On Earth, Yūya begins his life at Ousei Academy, where he quickly makes new friends among the students and impresses them by spectacularly rescuing Kaede Kazama from a stray soccer shot. Later, the Red Ogre gang, commanded by his jealous twin siblings, attack Ousei to take revenge on Kaori. Though momentarily paralyzed by his self-doubts, Yūya gathers his courage and single-handedly takes down the entire gang. When the police arrive and arrest the gang, the Red Ogres leader tries to kill Yōta and Sora for getting them into this mess, but Yūya rescues his siblings, leaving them deeply ashamed of their past mistreatment of him.
5 "New Family"

On another expedition in the other world's monster forest, Yūya encounters and rescues a Black Fenrir puppy, whom he takes adopts as a pet and names "Night". As he takes Night for walks in his neighborhood on Earth, Yūya inadvertently draws even more positive attention to himself, and also meets Kaori and Miu by chance. After Night proves more capable than his appearance suggests, he accompanies Yūya on his monster-slaying exploits, during one of which they slay a Crystal Deer which wields both fire and water magic. A drop item it leaves behind after getting killed bestows Yūya with an instant hot bath whenever he needs it. On another trip, they discover a cave, which contains a man's skeletal remains and a tome labelled The Book of the Sage. In the meantime, an infamous assassin named Headhunter is hired by Reigar's agents to kill Princess Lexia.
6 "The Sage and Magic"

The book is the journal of the Sage, the original owner of Yūya’s cottage, who mastered every known skill and was invited to become a god, but declined in favor of retaining his humanity. The book warns Yūya to cultivate friends who will never fear him, no matter how strong he becomes. Responding to Yuya’s desires, the book grants him the Sage's magical power and teaches Yūya and Night everything about using magic. At Ousei, the students are invited on a two-day camping trip. Yūya’s group includes Kaede, Akira and Rin. Yūya's friends, including Kaori, take him shopping for camping gear. The girls are separated from the boys and trapped by a fire, but Yūya uses magic to rescue them. In Arselia, Lexia’s father King Arnold learns Lexia proposed marriage to Yūya, and concludes Yūya seduced her. Additionally, a girl with a dark aura confronts the Divine Rabbit, God of Kicks, and announces she will destroy the world.
7 "An Encounter in the Woods"

While continuing to explore the forest and sharpen his skills, Yūya and Night encounter a girl being menaced by a group of goblins. Despite Night strangely trying to keep him away from her, Yūya saves the stranger. Introducing herself as Luna, the girl claims she came into the forest for training. After Yūya treats her with a kindness she never experienced before, she falls for him and asks him to help her improve, which he readily agrees to. Sometime later, Yūya returns to Earth to take a break from their team-up in favor of his field trip, with his classmate of mountain land owned by Ousei Academy. To the students' bafflement, they have to spend this weekend sleeping outdoors and foraging their food. Yūya once again impresses his fellow students by hand-catching fish for dinner. In the other world, however, Luna is revealed to be Headhunter.
8 "Off-Campus Study Trip"

After returning to camp, and as the only one of his team with cooking skills, Yūya turns the foraged ingredients into such a delicious meal Ms. Sawada promptly desires him as her future husband, much to the perturbation of Yūya's admirers among the female students. The next day, a wild bear strays into the camping area and attacks. When Ms. Sawada is threatened, Yūya subdues the beast bare-handedly, and it is decided to keep it around as a guard animal. On the day he is scheduled to meet Lexia's father, Yūya ends up thwarting Luna's attack on the princess and knocks her out. Unable to believe she is evil, and curious about her reasons, Yūya, spontaneously joined by Lexia, teleports them all to the Sage's hut to treat Luna's injuries.
9 "The Princess and the Assassin"

After learning about Yūya's relationship with her, Lexia questions Luna, who reveals her life's story before she became an assassin for the Guild of Darkness and that her latest mission is to kill Lexia. Expecting to be executed by either the princess or the guild for her failure, Luna is surprised when Yūya and Lexia instead extend their friendship to her; the princess hires her on as her bodyguard, and both girls declare their affection for Yūya to each other. After spending the night in the hut, Yūya escorts the two girls to the edge of the forest, where he parts ways with them because he has school coming up the next day. Right afterwards, Yūya and Night are joined by a little scarlet boar, whom Yūya names "Akatsuki". Back on Earth, Yūya participates in a soccer trial competition for the upcoming academy's ball sport games, where he continues to stand out even as a goalie. The same afternoon, Miu's boss tracks him down at Ousei.
10 "Master and Apprentice"

The manager of Miu's fashion magazine Cutie Beauty approaches Yūya as he leaves school, only to be refused; but when she learns of the impending sports competition, she decides to take pictures of Yūya participating in that event. While on another monster-hunting expedition deeper within the Demon's Den, Yūya is aided by the Divine Rabbit, who has been observing his progress and has chosen him to be his successor as the bearer of the Divine Kick. After hearing about the equilibrium maintained between two groups of advanced beings, the benevolent Divines (of which the Rabbit is a member) and the destructive Viles, Yūya agrees to get trained in order to protect his friends in both worlds. When the sports competition begins, by happenstance Yūya ends up participating in every discipline and easily prevails; and for assisting her during the tennis match, Kaori gives him a passing kiss on the cheek. When next facing his Vile opponent, the Rabbit is able to surprise her with the magic Yūya taught him as recompense for the training, whereupon she decides to target Yūya for elimination first.
11 "To the Royal Capital"

Yūya and Kaori begin spending more time together as they prepare for their exams. While in Yūya's home, Kaori accidentally discovers the gate to the other world; Yūya lets her in on his secret, and she promises to keep it. In the capital of Arselia, Lexia introduces Luna to her father, but as the circumstances for Luna's conversion are explained, King Arnold grows even more enraged at Yūya's "indecencies" against his daughter. Upon hearing this news, Reigar decides to accelerate his plans to have his father and Lexia assassinated to claim the throne. After gaining a holiday following the competition, Yūya makes his way to the royal palace and meets the king. His awkwardness worsens the king's bad impression of him even more, but then Reigar's agents attack with a magic-suppressing barrier. With his enhanced abilities, Yūya handily defeats the assailants; Lexia chides her father for his temper, and proof of Reigar's involvement is discovered.
12 "The Mysterious Assailant"

Even with Reigar still at large, Lexia and Luna (with Owen for additional protection) give Yūya a tour of the capital. As they pass the local Adventurer's Guild, Luna spontaneously decides to register herself and Yūya; but when Yūya is tested for his magical capabilities, the results, far beyond normal, still draw a lot of attention. While Yūya and the girls are on a herb-gathering quest, Reigar's whereabouts are discovered, and Owen asks Yūya to help apprehend the treacherous prince. Reigar is captured alive, but then the Vile girl appears, reveals that she had exploited Reigar into attempting the coup d'état in order to initiate a genocidal war, and prepares to kill everyone present. Yūya deflects her attacks with his magic, and the Vile girl retreats. On Earth, Kaori vainly tries to visit Yūya.
13 "Yuuya and Kaori"

Back at the royal palace, Yūya is asked to participate in Reigar's trial. Reigar states that since Lexia accidentally burned him when her magic went out of control years ago, he let himself be consumed by his rage against her. Reminded of his old life, Yūya uses a magic elixir he's made to cure the prince, and Lexia, unable to hate her brother, exerts her will and has a full pardon issued to him. As a reward for his actions, King Arnold knights Yūya and gifts him Reigar's former estate. Yūya keeps worrying about the Vile girl so much that he begins neglecting his friends as he frantically decides to level up for their next confrontation; but the Vile girl ambushes him during his training run. Worried about Yūya, Kaori goes through the portal and enters the Demon's Den, where she witnesses their battle. Usagi appears and pleads with the girl, whom he calls Yuti, to stop the fight, reminding her that her late master, the Archer, was a Divine and a protector of humanity, even as he was killed by them. Yuti refuses to relent and unleashes her full Vile power, only to be neutralized by Akatsuki. Usagi leaves her in Yūya's care, and despite all she has seen and heard, Kaori assures Yūya of her continuing trust in him.

In the mid-credits, it is shown how Kaori also meets and befriends Lexia and Luna, how Yūya and his siblings renew their relationship, and how Yuti emigrates to Earth and enrolls at Ousei as part of her redemption.

Reception[]

In May 2018, the web novel won the Grand Prize at the 3rd Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest in the Science Fiction/Modern Fantasy Division. As of February 2023, the series has 2 million copies in circulation.
