Isekai Shikkaku (異世界失格, Another world disqualification / Disqualification in the World / No Longer Human...In Another World) is a Japanese manga written by Hiroshi Noda and drawn by Takuhiro Wakamatsu. It has been serialized on Shogakukan's manga website "Yawaraka Spirits" since October 2, 2019. An anime television series adaptation produced by Atelier Pontdarc aired from July to September 2024.
The title of the series and its protagonist are a reference to Osamu Dazai, author of the novel No Longer Human, who died by lovers' suicide.

Synopsis[]
An adventure in another world with cute girls by your side and video game-like powers--sounds like an anime fan's dream, right? Not so for melancholic author Osamu Dazai, who would quite literally prefer to drop dead. Video games haven't even been invented yet when he gets yanked into another world in 1948. Really, all the fantastical adventure he keeps running into is just getting in the way of his poetic dream of finding the perfect place to die. But no matter how much he risks his hide, everything seems to keep turning out okay. Follow a miserable hero like no other in this cheerfully bleak Isekai comedy!

Summary[]
The book was published by Shincho Bunko after World War II and has accumulated more than 6 million copies so far, surpassing the cumulative circulation of Soseki Natsume's Heart.
The book "Another world disqualification/Disqualification in the World" is written in the tone of a certain writer. "I" (the writer) met the proprietress of the bar in Funabashi after World War II. Later, the proprietress handed over three notebooks and three photos sent by Oba Yezang (the protagonist) to "I" in the story. It is "First Handbook", "Second Handbook", and "Third Handbook" (the third handbook is divided into two parts). "I" inscribed "Foreword" and "Afterword" for it, and presented the three manuscripts intact.
The author of these three notebooks, Oba Yezang, wrote about how he grew up in a powerful family from adolescence to middle age, his relationship with his father, his interactions with classmates, his alcoholism, indulging in women's pornography, participating in "illegal" left-wing groups, getting married, Many negative life experiences such as marriage change, affair, attempted suicide, etc. The protagonist claims that he is very afraid of "human beings " and can only act in front of him at the risk of being exposed.
"Another world disqualification/Disqualification in the World" is Osamu Dazai who skillfully expresses his life and thoughts through the life experiences of the protagonist. "Another world disqualification/Disqualification in the World" can also be regarded as the autobiography of Osamu Dazai himself.

World Setting[]
A world that continues to summon heroes to defeat the Demon King. |
The setting of this work, Zauberberg, is a world where various races coexist, including humans, demi-humans, elves, dwarves, and goblins. Under the world church (Hellsehen), which is led by the Pope, four bishops govern the four regions outside the Pope's domain. To defeat the furious Demon King that threatens the peace of Zauberberg, the Pope has been summoning transients from another world. The transients arrive at one of the sanctuaries in the four regions and aim for the Demon King's castle from there. However, many transients have begun to misuse the divine power (Gifted) granted to them for the purpose of defeating the Demon King, referring to it as "cheat skills" and using it for their own selfish desires, leading the world church to struggle with them. The divine powers vary among individuals, including skills that generate an infinite amount of gold coins, skills that unconditionally turn others into slaves, and skills that analyze an opponent's status. |
Character[]
The protagonist of this work. A man with an incredible bad luck, being even denied his desire to just die. Details[]
The profession seems to be inspired by Osamu Dazai, a writer. The title of this work, "Isekai Shikkaku," which is also the Sensei's skill, was derived from Dazai's representative novel, "No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku)." The date on which the protagonist was transported to the alternate world also corresponds to an actual date relevant to Dazai. However, unlike the real Dazai, whose appearance was that of a "Kainan-type" face, the protagonist has sharp eyes, lacks vitality, and maintains a consistently cynical expression throughout. Additionally, there are traces of inspiration from Dazai in various forms, such as naming the obedient priest's horse "Melos" and occasionally quoting phrases directly from Dazai's novels during chants.
In the Showa era, he attempted to commit suicide with his beloved woman, Sachiko (Sacchan), and ended up being reincarnated in another world after being struck by a "Truck-kun (reincarnation-winning truck)." Originally, this truck appears to those who feel unhappy, but for some reason, it shows up at the moment he felt the happiest and blasts him into another world.
In any case, despite having been transported to another world, he is expected to possess superhuman powers. However, when Anette, a bishop responsible for one of the churches of the world religion at the time of his reincarnation, checked, she was perplexed to find him as the weakest entity there. Although he appears to have made a serious choice regarding dying, he failed four times in the real world and ultimately failed the final suicide attempt in the reincarnation-winning truck "Truck-kun", totaling five failures. Even after arriving in the alternate world, he somehow continues to live despite dying each time. Usually, he consumes a tablet called "Calmotin" like candy, but this turns out to be a tremendous poison in the other world.
When he was hit by the truck, Sachiko, who was with him, also felt that she had come to an alternate world, prompting him to embark on a journey to find her. The reason for searching for her is that this time he aims to succeed in their suicide pact.
Essentially, he spends his time contemplating how to die and what kind of writing to produce. However, he often finds that he dislikes any writing he creates, leading him to tear it up repeatedly. Therefore, while on his adventures, he seeks materials that will stimulate his sensibilities and enable him to write. Even so, when he does write, a sense of vitality and energy emerges.
He also possesses a unique skill that allows him to read the true thoughts of otherworlders and to send reincarnators back to the real world (limited to reincarnators). Naturally, the ability to read thoughts is a tremendously threatening skill for both otherworlders and past-life individuals.
Actions in the Story[]
On June 13, 1948, during the Showa era. He attempted to commit suicide together with a woman named Sacchan near a river but was struck by a reincarnation truck from another world. The moment I woke up, Sensei found himself at the bottom of a luxurious church in another world - the Zauberberg. There he met Annette, the bishop of that church and her guide from his previous life. It was his first time seeing the scenery of this new world, but I felt depressed instead, realizing that he had failed his suicide attempt. He immediately tried to overdose on the industrial sleeping drug "Calmotin," that he had in his belongings to attempt suicide again. When Annette resurrected Sensei by deciphering an order, he regretted his actions and instead contemplated turning Annette into a tree. When Annette mentioned that he was one of the heroes destined to save the world and had a mission to fulfill, he expressed that he didn't know anything about such a mission, just casually picking up and eating the Calmotin, he had just swallowed like a snack. Sensei questioned who had chosen him as the selected person, continuing to show a lack of clear reaction. When Annette revealed my status, he thought his response would change, but it turned out to be only Level 1, with HP 1, MP 0, and severe poisoning (Calmotin). At that moment, his belongings consisted only of cigarettes, matches, a mechanical pencil, a notebook, and tranquilizers.
Annette was astounded, coughing in disbelief at having never seen such a weak reincarnation while he smoked a cigarette. Upon checking the status, Annette remarked that there seemed to be some mistake; I had neither the talent nor the qualifications to live in this other world.
"Hmmm, that's my life. I'm just looking for a place to die because--
I've been a writer since birth, nothing more, nothing less."― Osamu Dazai to Annette
Leaving those words behind, he steps outside the church gate. Naturally, he doesn’t know the way and has no one I know, but by chance, Sensei discovers a signpost, yet struggles to read the otherworldly script. A mysterious voice echoes in my head, saying my experience points have increased, and as I suffer from a headache, Sensei hears a scream and rushes over. There, he finds a cat girl attacked by a plant monster named Death Tree. Upon seeing this, I reflect that the woman dying is truly beautiful. I'm drawn in, leading to my demise, and accumulate enough experience to reach Level 3. Pretending to be weak against the cat beast girl, I defeat Death Tree in one blow, and upon hearing words of praise, I take out a cigarette from my pocket and smoke it, grumbling about how I always tried to kill her but survived after attempting suicide five times, all of which failed.
Meanwhile, I take the cat beast girl's hand, and when he coincidentally looks at his wrist, he sees the remains of a rope that he had tried to use for a suicide attempt. Sensei then think she must have also reincarnated somewhere in Zauberberg, prompting yet another adventure to attempt suicide together with Sacchan.
To inquire about Sacchan's whereabouts, they re-enter a church where Annette is, but Annette also does not know where Sacchan is. Then, they decide to head to the castle of the Rot Kingdom, following the words of a cat beast-girl. Annette, who has a favorable impression of the Sensei, decides to join his adventure. While Annette and the cat beast-girl, Tama, are arguing, they accidentally come across a coffin that has been left in a state of a broken surgery from a distance and take a nap inside it. Annette and Tama say that when they arrive at the royal castle, they want to be awakened from the coffin. When they reach the bustling district of the Roth Kingdom, they have no different reaction even when seeing the bustling district of another world, and when they meet the king, Thomas, he asks them to share the adventure story, telling them how it feels to lie in a coffin, leading to a mild misunderstanding. King Thomas, having decided that his only daughter, Princess Charlotte, will hold a wedding, states that there are two prospective partners and asks if the adventurer Sensei can decide which one. He replies he does not know, and then suggests that an important matter like his daughter's future be decided by the adventurer they just met, accusing the king of being unworthy.
They then leave through the door of Roth Kingdom Hall and find a room in the royal castle to sleep, wandering through the hallway but accidentally discovering Princess Charlotte. They exchange casual conversation, but Charlotte, unable to decide on her wedding the next day, hears about how the speaker has always failed but never left their choices to others. After that, they return to their room to sleep once more. The next day, when the king calls them again, Princess Charlotte, influenced by the Sensei the night before, decides to choose him as her partner for suicide.
When Charlotte explains her reasons for choosing a joint suicide with the Sensei, it is impressive. However, Gomez ends up in danger because he is actually the Minotaur who had planned to conquer the Kingdom of Roth without bloodshed and hand it over to the angry Demon King. But the princess simply disliked Gomez's body odor, which brought her no peace. Then, as the Minotaur begins to rampage, it is suggested that the Minotaur might stop itself from killing the princess. After the Minotaur kills the princess and then slaughters all the citizens, he rushes to conquer the Kingdom of Roth, and it seems that hope has been fulfilled as he disappears.
"...Hmmm, that's the real wind, isn't it? You are a kind-hearted princess after all. You are disqualified for my accompanying suicide."
― Osamu Dazai to Charlotte
At the moment of death, the princess tries to carefully express her true wishes and pushes herself forward to convince him, intending to face the Minotaur’s attack alone. But in that moment, Anette defends the attack with a shield, and Tama survives by using a martial technique to blow the Minotaur far away.
"However, while a woman who dies is beautiful,
but a woman who stands up on her own feet is also very beautiful."― Osamu Dazai to Charlotte
After that, there is news that Charlotte has succeeded to the throne and has become the queen, leaving behind the impression that it has all come to pass. And today, the Sensei occasionally hears a voice as the two of them lie in the coffin, taking a nap.
When the tube that Tama and Annette were pulling for the hungry Tama stopped they opened the tube cover and asked if it's time to eat. Then, realizing that there is no tofu, they twist and close the cover again, going back into the tube. Meanwhile, while Tama and Annette are chatting, they ponder new novel material, opening the tube cover to think about something and get bitten by Annette's ministry. And the ministry does not carry out its mission; when it returns and the soul is out, it names the working spirit Melos. Then, a woman who had flipped her hood over the dragon and its master, a dragon that was passing by accidentally, appears. As soon as the hooded woman learns that the Sensei was a reincarnator, she removes her hood and attacks the Sensei with powerful black magic. Annette tries her best to stop it, can she could only reduce the damage and could not completely defend against it. Then, a horned woman representing a traffic jam— Ordelia tries to kill Annette and Tama, and Sensei blocks the attack from Ordelia in front of them.
Since he had no particular offensive ability or any skill, his body falls through the number of fists of the Ordelia, but somehow he does not die, but gets up again and says a few words that try to go through the Ordelia's mind, driving the Ordelia away and falling again. Then Annette's worker demon desperately takes the whole group to a nearby church, and the doctor finally comes back to life.
Then the next day he picks up a deadly poison at the market, and as soon as the shopkeeper explains it to him, he drinks it like a drink and laughs that he could not die again. Then, while Annette was talking with Ysha, a friend and the bishop of the church who treated the doctor and his group, she takes Annette for an allowance for some medicine she wants to buy. With reference to the west side of the pillar, Ysha looked at the doctor and at once described him as a doomed human being.
He tried to write a text using his adventures up to this point as material, but it was not well written and he tore up the text he was using and appeared on the floor. Then he chewed and ate Calmotin like candy again, and when he met Wodelia, he had the desire to create. Then he rode out to the city at Annette's solicitation, and Annette assumed that the weak teacher needed it most, and a very large and strong armor was forced on him, but of course he could not move, but he liked this oppressive feeling if he liked it. As it is, Annette and Tama go somewhere to see the place while trapped in the armor, and they accidentally face Ysha. He then hears from Ysha that she wants him to cancel the party with Annette, but he hastily laughs.
He then lectures Ysha to the contrary, saying that it is not a matter for Ysha to decide whether Annette will follow him or not. Then he hears one voice from Ysha, who expresses her disbelief in the transferees, and she is attacked by demons and people brainwashed by her previous incarnation Suzuki's Otherworldly Transference Cheat Skill, but thanks to the strong armor Annette bought, she does not suffer any damage. However, the armor is broken by Tama's attack, and she becomes a free body and asks Ysha which way Suzuki went.
"I have a feeling we can finally use a masterpiece."

Abilities[]
"People like you, who go around loudly preaching their own righteousness ── I absolutely detest..."
― Osamu Dazai
Sensei has the raw talent to observe and understand human beings, and their personal feelings, story, motivation, and also their ambitions. This is the raw talent from being a writer to observing and understanding human beings. It is not only limited to observing people, as he can even hypothesize their livelihoods, their likes, and the lifestyles of people whose names he doesn't know. To support this talent, something resembling eidetic memory is required. While Sensei is a pessimist, the basis of that pessimism is not rejection but understanding.
Deadly Poison (Calmotin)
|
Unlike most otherworlders, Dazai possesses no fighting skills or combat-applicable divine gifts, not to mention lacking innate survival instincts. Instead, his party does all the fighting while Dazai observes and delegates. The closest he ever gets to fighting is when he poisons any monster that tries to kill him.
Dazai's "A Tale for You (Storyteller)" is a special ability, where several characters have noted that it appears to be made specifically to fight otherworlders. It normally can't be seen on Dazai's status screen, unless he is in the presence of otherworlders that he has taken an interest in. Although the ability to write down someone's backstory doesn't seem impressive, it is apparently a requirement to perform a magic ritual that banishes an otherworlder back to their original world without fail. The same power can be used on natives to power them up by reviewing their history and revealing their Hidden Depths.
Part of "A Tale for You (Storyteller)" ability is how he acknowledges that otherworlders his power affects aren't the straight-up villains or losers they are initially made out to be, but rather broken people that can be mended (the Cowardly Man is braver than he thinks, that Yuriko isn't greedy, but wants to be acknowledged, etc) before tearing up the rough-draft, sending them back to live their old lives with renewed hope for their futures. It's depicted as an incredibly merciful act that allows them a true second chance at turning their lives around.
Writing: A TALE FOR YOU (Storyteller)
It is a Divine skill that is based on the unpolished manuscript of Osamu Dazai's autobiography for a certain person. It was, “the Almost Masterpiece of a Story". According to him, he once stated that "the majority of what I write are projections of other people's stories." It is a compilation that readapts their way of life, the author Dazai's other self in a way, as it is a manuscript with the saying, "For an author, all works are completed piece of that person, but unable be called a masterpiece" as its core. |
"Ahh... Yet again, I couldn't write a masterpiece. Dunno when they appear as the person who will incite my inspiration."
He begins by writing from the beginning to the end. After that, he must tear the book's paper, where the results would depend on how far he can progress with the manuscript. Completing some pages will result in only coincidences occurring around them, but completing all the pages and finishing the manuscript will allow for the person-centered in the story to be what they imagined themselves to be, unleashing a barrier that gathers around them, which is the magic ritual that transfers magic to an otherworlder so that they can to their original world. The book (19th-century books of Japan) is established as the greatest weapon, and he stated that his personal story of this world has been finished but his own story in his original world has yet to be finished.
Another part of this Divine Skill is that it can awaken the true potential of a person by searching their History in memory or a diary. The same method of unleashing the true story of a certain book or a person unleashes their true potential power [awaken] or boosts their parameter. It can also reset or heal any injury made towards the target.
Type: | Anti-Unit / Awakened | Maximum number of targets: | 1-100 person | Range: | 2 - 10 meters |

Being an Otherworlder, he gained a unique trait of his ── HP [001 → -????-] & his stats [Parameter] begin to boost up ▲ when he feels like he is excited by a simple word or a wonderful memories. Dazai's personality perfectly fits this situation by giving the opponent a gaze that "he doesn't want to fight because he is crazy/Pervert" face. Lacking any fighting skills or experience (not to mention his suicidal tendencies), Dazai usually lets his opponents attack him without so much of a flinch.
That said, his perpetually poisoned status effect makes him a giant safety hazard, instantly poisoning any monster that tries to eat him to death. His dark disposition and sense of Personal Space also make for effective psychological warfare, managing to scare off three thug otherworlders who were perfectly willing to kill him by goading them into doing it.

Thomas asks for help picking which of Charlotte's suitors to marry, the heroic knight Gomes or the minstrel and Charlotte's childhood friend Otto. Sensei calls him a fool to leave this decision to strangers. That night, as Tama and Annette argue about who can sleep next to Sensei, he leaves the room and meets Charlotte. He talks about his desire to die and she talks about how she cannot decide who to marry. He says she should consider what she truly wants, not what others think. The next day, Charlotte says she picks neither of them and would rather commit suicide with Sensei, making Annette faint. She says Otto does nothing useful except play music and Gomes is stinky, then snaps at her father for trying to make her marry when she did not want to. Infuriated, Gomes reveals he was a demon in disguise and attacks them with Tama defending them. Gomes rushes Sensei and Charlotte, and when she says she does not want to die, he pushes her out of the way. Melos drags them to Ysha who heals them. Ysha does not know Sacchan and scolds Annette for leaving her temple and traveling with an otherworlder, reminding her that everyone summoned so far was a scumbag. Meanwhile, Waldelia swears to avenge her father. Tama and Annette buy Sensei a suit of armor. Ysha meets him and warns him to stay away from Annette.
