Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu (無職転生 〜異世界行ったら本気だす〜, literally Jobless Reincarnation: I Will Seriously Try If I Go To Another World) is a Japanese light novel series by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Shirotaka. The series is about a jobless and hopeless man who dies after having a sad and withdrawn life and reincarnates in a fantasy world while keeping his memories, determined to enjoy his new life without regrets under the name Rudeus Greyrat.

Originally published on the internet web novel website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in November 2012, a year later it was announced the series would receive a print release under Media Factory's MF Books imprint with illustrations done by a Pixiv user called Shirotaka. A manga adaptation by Yuka Fujikawa began serialization in the June 2014 issue of Monthly Comic Flapper while three spin-offs were also released. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the tankōbon volumes of the manga for localization in North America. The company also has licensed the original light novels. An anime television series adaptation produced by Studio Bind aired from January to December 2021. A second season premiered in July 2023.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation has become a success, with its web novel published from Syosetu's rankings has made cumulative appearances as the most popular work on the website, and later expands into a franchise began in 2014. By June 2023, the franchise had over 13 million copies in circulation. Although early volumes of the light novels were the subject of controversy due to sexual themes leading to censorship and complaints, the latter chapters of the series were subject of praise for the development and handling of Rudeus' growth.

Character[]

The main character of this work. Her nickname is "Rudi/Rudy". He is a reincarnated person from modern Japan and was born in the village of Buena, Fitua, Kingdom of Asura. In his previous life, he was withdrawn until he was 34 years old due to bullying in high school and did not attend the funeral of his parents, so he was kicked out of the house by his brother and died in an accident trying to help three high school students who were run over by a truck immediately afterwards. did. After his reincarnation, he decided to live seriously this time because of the regret that he threw everything halfway in his previous life.

Keeping in mind "do not get sick", "do not blame others", and "work hard", learn magic, swordsmanship, language, etc. from an early age, avoid rubbing with others as much as possible, even if something happens I try not to unilaterally say bad things, considering the other person's position and what I did wrong  . Also, because he was a dropout in his previous life, he does not want to abandon the weak and the dropout, and tries to do his best. It is thought to be a hard-working and mild-mannered person, but since his roots are amorous, he cannot read the air and may make the other person uncomfortable. Other than that, the bad things of the previous life have not completely disappeared at the time of reincarnation, such as playing around with the other person and making a fool of the other person, but he grows up by meeting various people.

The total amount of magical power is extremely large due to magical power training from childhood and Laplace factor. Since you can use attack magic without chanting, you can control the generation and store the magic power so that even low-ranked magic can be released with the power of the imperial class. However, since the human body cannot withstand using magic that is commensurate with the total amount of magical power, magic that makes use of the enormous total amount of magical power cannot be used. Also, only attack magic can be used without chanting, and healing magic cannot be used without chanting. His specialties are "rock cannonballs" that shape stones made with magical power, add rotation, and shoot them at ultra-high speed, and "mud swamp", a mixed magic of water and soil systems. In addition to the fact that swordsmanship does not have a fighting spirit, the sword god that does not suit the aptitude because his master Paul did not dislike the aptitude of the Kitagami style and the next master, Guillene, was a sword god style swordfighter. He was taught the style and stopped as an intermediate swordfighter, but when he was 11 years old, he changed his right eye to a magical eye "predictive eye" that can see the future a few seconds ahead.. Its ability is recognized by some of the most powerful people in the world, but its self-evaluation is low due to the fact that it has seen many such overwhelming strong people and the reflection of the previous life. On the contrary, there is a tendency for people to misunderstand or overestimate what went well by chance as a strategy.

In addition to the "human language" that I learned in my childhood, I can use the "beast god language" that I learned from Guillene and the "genie language" that I learned from the dictionary I got from Roxy.

After learning magic from his tutor Roxy, he taught Sylphiette magic, but became Ellis's tutor to earn money for Lanoa Magic College. In the Fitua territory transfer incident that occurred the day after his 10th birthday, he was sent to the demon continent with Ellis, where he was helped by the Spelled Louis Geld, and then the three of them formed an adventurer party "Dead End". Aim for the Kingdom of Asura. Arriving in Fitua territory over three years, he left for Louis Geld and Ellis to find his missing mother, Zenith, in the northern part of the central continent.

In the search in the north, Zenith went around to make a name for himself as an adventurer in order to find himself, and after two years he became known as "Rudeus of the Quagmire". After learning from a report from Erinarise that Zenith was on the continent of Vegarit and Paul and his friends were heading for him, he enrolled as a special student at Lanoa Magic University at the recommendation of Erinarise and Hitogami.

《Personality》
── Because of his former life, he is careful not to get carried away and become arrogant. As a result, he is extremely self-aware and humble because he does not want to revert to his old self. He is a kind person, helping his friends and protecting his family whenever needed. Due to being capable in many fields, people have high expectations of him. Rudeus is very polite to others, often making them uncomfortable.
── Having the morals of his past life, he hesitates with the thought of killing someone. However, he displays aggression and blood lust toward anyone threatening his family. He is extremely perverted and even though he has this shortcoming, his family and friends still love him since he always takes care of them to a great extent. Even with very high magic capacity and high potential in battle, he often lacks the confidence to fight his enemy.

Abilities[]

"It's no good to overestimate me. Victory is something that you grasp by always being modest, you know?"

Rudeus Greyrat

Rudeus doesn't have cheat abilities that accompany reincarnation (for some reason, he has a high limit value for total magical power "Laplace Factor"), and most of the abilities he obtains are the result of his own tireless efforts. Rudeus is a powerful magician born with a strong Laplace factor which is one of the reasons for his great magical power besides his intense training at an early age. As he was reincarnated from another world, he is immune to Orsted's curse. This is a trait that is inherited by his descendants.

When he was a child, he learned the language of the Central Continent, "Human Language", while my father Paul read to me, learned the language of the Great Forest, "Beast God Language" from Ghyslaine, and learned the language of the Magic Continent from the dictionary I received from Roxy. He learned "Magic God Language" and self-studyed "Battle God Language", the language of the Begaritto Continent whose grammar is close to human language.

However, there are some languages that cannot be used, such as 'Tenshingo', 'Umishingo', and 'Ryujingo', which are minority languages and have no materials or opportunities to learn. In addition, it is possible to read, write and speak the characters and languages of the previous life (real world Japan) as they are.

  • Voiceless Incantation
    • Rudeus is one of the few people capable of using a voiceless incantation, and even rarer as a person who can use voiceless incantation with melded magics.  He cannot use voiceless incantation for healing magic due to his lack of understanding in regards to how mana is manipulated to heal. A normal Magician takes at least five seconds for a simple spell, while for higher-level spells its thirty to sixty seconds. Rudeus can do it almost instantly no matter what difficulty of the spell, with the exception of healing magic. Rudeus needs to use the chant of a new spell being taught to him before he can use its voiceless incantation version which puzzles Orsted.
  • Demon Eyes
  • When he was born, both eyes were normal eyes, but when he was 11 years old, he met Kishirika, the Great Emperor of the Demon World, who changed his right eye to a demonic eye. She later had her left eye changed to another demon eye.
    • 『Foresight』
      • It's a Demon Eye that Kishirika gave to Rudeus for giving her food replacing his right eye. It allows the user to see a certain amount into the future. It is difficult to adjust the focus point; the farther into the future he looks, the more unreliable it becomes. The power of Demon Eyes are adjusted according to the amount of mana poured into them. The more mana Rudeus inputs into the Foresight Demon Eye, the farther into the future he can see. Rudeus is able to fine-tune the eye to see 10 seconds into the future reliably.
      • Experienced warriors can negate the Demon Eye's usefulness in battle by making split-second decisions, forcing the eye to see multiple futures. This is learned when Rudeus duels Ruijerd. Some beings such as Badigadi are completely immune to the eye when wearing the Fighting God Armor. The eye can also act as a conduit for another being's power as Hitogami was able to show Rudeus a vision of where to find Aisha and Lilia through his eye. Another weakness of the eye is that it does not pick up sounds and as such, Gyes was able to incapacitate Rudeus using Howling magic.
      • Overuse or losing control of the eye may cause the user some sort of pain and nausea as a result of overloading the brain. This is shown when Rudeus felt a moment of extreme nausea after Hitogami used the eye to show him a vision of the future, or when he originally received the eye and it took him a while to learn to control it since it would give him a double vision.
    • 『Clairvoyant』
      • It's a second Demon Eye that Kishirika gave to Rudeus for giving her a donut when she is captured by Atofe replacing his left eye. It allows the user to see far away. However, the "focus point" is difficult to control. Rather than acting as a scope, the Clairvoyant Eyes seem to change the perspective of one's vision, with the amount of mana determining the distance from the user.
  • Magic / Witch Craft
    • When it comes to magic, he has a natural talent, and he improved his talent with Roxy as his teacher when he was a child. His natural growth allowance is extraordinary due to a peculiar constitution called the Laplace factor (the total amount of magical power in a lifetime is determined by how much this growth allowance can be drawn out by training by the end of childhood). In addition to that, since his consciousness was connected to him from his previous life, he began training very early on, and boasted a huge amount of magical power that was far from human. He also masters Chantless attack magic.
      Mushoku Tensei3
    • Even an excellent magician will not run out of magical power even if he fires a series of saint-class or king-class magic that runs out of magical power after a few hits. It is said that its amount of magical power is comparable to that of the demonic hero "Majin" Laplace. The advantage of Chantless magic is that you can change the power and effects of attack magic, and by using a huge amount of magical power, even low-rank magic can be as powerful as an emperor class. He also reproduces a technique called "Multiple Casting", which uses two types of magic at the same time, with Chantless magic, and is able to quickly activate "Mixed Magic", which normally takes a long time.
    • In addition to Chantless magic, it is easy to imagine "mixed magic", which is a fusion of phenomena from the knowledge of natural phenomena in the previous life, so it can be efficiently reproduced (King and Emperor class magic is within Saint class + Since it is a derivative of mixed magic, it became synonymous with mastering all offensive magic except God class, which requires a separate magic circle, when the Saint class of four attributes was acquired).
    • In addition, he has a high sense of magic, such as self-studying magic that he has only seen once, and mastering the control of the demon eye in a short time. However, he cannot fully use that magical power with a human body, and is no match for the strongest class magicians such as the demon god Laplace. Also, only attack magic can be used without chants, and healing and detoxification magic cannot be used without chant (because there is no medical knowledge and it is not possible to imagine healing the human body).
    • His rankings as a magician are as follows:
      • «Water Emperor Ranked»
      • «Earth Saint Ranked»
      • «Wind Saint Ranked»
      • «Fire Saint Ranked»
      • «Healing Magic - Saint Ranked»
      • «Detoxification Magic - Saint Ranked»
      • «Barrier Magic - Intermediate Ranked»
      • 『Nuclear Explosion』: Unofficial God-class magic(stated by Orsted) that Rudeus created in a desperate attempt during his fight against Orsted. By focusing a tremendous amount of magic power at a designated area, he creates a huge explosion around his pinpointed target and leaves behind a mushroom-like cloud similar to a nuclear explosion. During the second confrontation with Orsted, he managed to destroy a village with this magic. Even with Orsted opening the First Dragon Gate to tremendously lower its power, the explosion was still packed with power similar to Laplace. It is hinted that this is Fire-type magic.
      • 『Ran Ma』- Disturb Magic: It is a unique magic that Rudeus learns after observing Orsted in their first fight and works by interfering with the magic of the opponent disturbing it thus preventing it from working. This is a very rare and difficult technique as Sylphiette, who is a talented mage in her own right, had a lot of trouble learning it.
      • 『Dry Steaming』: Dry Steaming is a melded magic of fire and wind originally developed by Rudeus to dry wet clothes with a risk of damaging the fabric. Used to block the opponent's field of vision. It is often used in conjunction with quagmire.
      • 『Explosive Stone Cannon』: It is a variation of Stone Cannon originally developed by Rudeus. The stone is hollow thereby exploding at the point of contact.
      • 『Electric』: Realizing that 『Lightning』 might be a bit overkill as a single target spell, Rudeus weakened the King-class Water magic. Rudeus was able to use Voiceless incantation to create a miniature thundercloud, compressing it, and designating a target for 『Lightning』. In order to distinguish it from the normal overpowered spell, he named it 『Electric』. The Electric strike is hard to avoid and can numb the nervous system, making it a very useful spell against people who can wear Touki. It is effective against the Immortal Demon Race as demonstrated in the battle against Atofe.
      • 『Light Spirits』: Rudeus can make a light spirit scroll and use them to summon bright light spirits as a source of light.
      • 『Howling Magic』: Howling is a type of magic that can locate or paralyze enemies by using sound as a medium, but Rudeus can only use it to surprise or scare opponents. He learned it from Gustav Dedorudia.

Rudeus trains his body by running and modern Japanese muscle training (push-ups, sit-ups, squats) every day, so his basic physical strength is high. However, since he was unable to learn physical strengthening through fighting spirit (a technique that uses the magical power within the body to explosively improve physical abilities), compared to warriors with fighting spirit, his power and reflexes are considerably inferior, making him a high-ranking magus.

  • Fighting Style
    • 『Sword Techniques』
      • Intermediate-ranked Sword God Style
      • Elementary-ranked North God Style
      • Elementary-ranked Water God Style
      • Since Rudeus cannot make use of Touki, he cannot rise to Advanced ranked Sword Techniques.
    • 『Saint Dragon Battle Aura』
      • Saint Dragon Battle Aura is a fighting style that was created by Dragon God Urupen, who was considered to be the weakest Dragon God due to having the lowest magical capacity ever and rose to become the strongest with this fighting style. It involves defeating an opponent using the minimal amount of magical power. It is described as a fighting style by Rudeus that combines magic arts and the real world martial art Wushu.
      • Rudeus is currently being taught how to use this fighting form by Orsted. This fighting technique is the best fighting style for Rudeus due to it's great compatibility with the 『Magic Armor』, making the 『Magic Armor』 performance more potent, efficient, and useful during combat. It should be noted that it is a fighting style and not a type of touki as Rudeus lacks the ability to use actual touki.
    • 『Tactics』
      • He has been noted by others to be a battle genius. During his first fight with Paul, he was smart enough to trap Paul's leg to restrict his movements. During his time as an adventurer, he was known for his skill with Quagmire and trapping opponents with earth magic before attacking. After training with Orsted, he became more aware of his tactics and was able to perform the strategies more efficiently since he was conscious of them.
      • In the case that he is trapped by a high level barrier magic that restricts his magic, he will use the Manatite stone to destroy the seal and use a combination of Quagmire, Mist, and Electric to slow down or disable his opponents before using a summoning scroll to summon his trump card, the Magic armor MK I, to defeat his enemies should the need arise for the fire power. Taking stories and legends from his previous world, he was also able to come up with a strategy to defeat a hydra that could regenerate its heads.
《Equipment》
Arrogant Water Dragon King』 (Aqua Heartia)
Arrogant water dragon king
An expensive staff was gifted to him by Eris on his 10th Birthday. The material of the wand is made from a rough and bony wood that comes from a tree called 『Elder Torrent』, that grows in the large forest of the Eastern region of the Mills Continent.
  • The Wand will become a subspecies after it drinks from the Faeries' Spring. The tip of the staff is adorned with a large Magical stone that is the size of a fist that comes from a stray dragon located in the Begaritt's continent. The maker is from the Asura kingdom palace's Magic team, a wand-maker(Rod Director) called Chein Procyon. A wand's rank is determined by the wood and the Magic rock, both of which are A-ranked materials. The Magic Stone alone is at least worth over 100 Asuran Gold Coins.
  • The wand has a lot of sentimental value to Rudeus, as Ruijerd was able to see how important it was to Rudeus and convinced him to not sell it so that they could take Ruijerd to the Mills Continent the legal route; instead, Ruijerd agreed to enlist the services of a smuggler even though they would be getting involved with people who would harm children, which is against Ruijerd's warrior code. Rudeus commonly calls it his friend and has a few nicknames for it. Although his power has outgrown the staff's abilities, he will still occasionally use it during important battles. The Staff is normally kept in his room as a decoration due to Rudeus who usually uses 『Shotgun Cannon』 as his main weapon. Arrogant Water Dragon King is given to Lara Greyrat when she leaves the house along with Leo.
  • Magic amplification coefficient:
    • Water Magic: 5 times
    • Earth Magic: 3 times
    • Wind Magic: 3 times
    • Fire Magic: 2 times
Mana Absorbing Stone
A stone made from the Manatite Hydra's body. From Rudeus' testing of the stone, there is a front and back of the stone. When mana is applied to the back of the stone, a high pitched sound would ring out and the front of the stone will emit magic canceling wave that is similar to 『Ran Ma』. The stone does not actually absorb mana and its magic breakdown power is similar to the Disturb Magic; however, the stone also requires an almost equal amount of magic power to negate attacking magic. But, the stone is more effective than 『Ran Ma』 due to its capability to cancel completed magic. Magically created objects like dolls that have their mana stabilized will not be destroyed by the waves, but magic attacks that do not have their magic stabilized will be destroyed. Magic Circles will not be destroyed by the stone, but the barriers created will. By inserting the stone into the 『Zariff's Prosthetic arm』, it can be an effective tool at the cost of magic-less effective from that arm.
Zariff's Prosthetic Arm
From Zanoba's research of the doll left by the previous owner of Rudeus' house, Zanoba with the help of Cliff were able to create an artificial prosthetic arm. With the chant, "『Oh Earth, become thine Arm.』", the magic tool can be activated, and can be deactivated with the chant 『Oh Arm, return to Earth』. It can also allow the wearer to feel tactile feedback from the fingers and even has the strength to restrain Zanoba's Miko Power. The arm can also fly out as a Rocket Punch. It was used as the replacement of Rudeus' left hand that was lost in the fight against the Manatite Hydra and continued to function as a Rocket Punch gauntlet, after all of his limbs were restored by Orsted's King Class Healing Magic, until its capabilities were replaced by the second version black 『Magic Armor』. He still wears them as gauntlets and he has one for both hands.
Dragon Tribe's Robe
Its crest was engraved by Dragon God with the ability to block Hitogami's future foresight from seeing the future of the wearer, effectively blocking Hitogami's view of Rudeus's immediate surroundings. Orsted gave it to Rudeus after they started working together.
Magic Armor
Full body armor magic tool. By pouring in magic power and moving it, it exerts power proportional to the amount of magic power. It is possible to make up for physical deficiencies such as physical ability and swordsmanship. Since it consumes an extraordinary amount of magic power, it's practically Rudeus' exclusive equipment, but if you use it at full throttle, you'll be on par with the world's top teams.
Magic Armor 『MK

Magic Armor 『MK. Zero』

  • Magic Armor 『MK. I』
    • The prototype was created under the joint cooperation of Zanoba and Cliff. Its height is a little less than 3 meters. The right hand was affixed with a Stone Gatling Cannon and the left hand was affixed with a shield and a Magic Absorption Stone.
    • Although its mana consumption was quite high, it was considered to hold defensive and offensive power similar to that of the Seven Great World Powers, It was specifically created in order to fight Dragon God Orsted, though it was still kept in use after that. It was destroyed by the Fighting God during the Battle of Biheiril Kingdom.
  • Magic Armor 『MK. II』
    • It was a complete set that could be separated into arm, leg, and torso parts. It was a jet-black armor and helmet. A smaller version of the『MK. I』. It could provide physical ability similar to that of a Saint Ranked swordsman if worn.
  • Magic Armor 『MK. Zero』
    • The decisive battle weapon of Rudeus was created for the Battle of Biheiril Kingdom. It is a stronger version of the『MK. I』, although it consumes double the mana.
  • Magic Armor 『MK. III』
    • The Magic Armor was used by Rudeus during his last years. Its height was a little more than 2 meters and its ability was the same as the『MK. I』.
    • This Magic Armor became the basis for the mass production of the All-Purpose Magic Armor Series later on.
Summoning Scrolls
Each scroll has a one time use and can be used to summon the 『Magic Armor Mk I 』. He also is able to create scrolls that link to hidden locations, in the event he needs to make a quick escape.
Gatling Gun
only Rudeus can handle, for the fight against Orsted. This weapon is able to fire off 10 of his standard 『Stone Cannon』 per second. Rudeus only uses this weapon in conjunction when wearing the 『Magic Armor Mk I 』. Rudeus defeated Atofe using this weapon by three steps:
  1. In the first step, Atofe's armor was smashed into several small pieces.
  2. In the second step, Atofe's shoulder was torn to pieces.
  3. In the third step, Atofe's upper half of the body became full of holes that were blown off and separated from her lower half.

After Atofe realize that 『Magic Armor Mk I 』 wasn't the Fighting God Armor, she pointed out the difference in color and that the 『Gatling Gun』 didn't exist at that time.

『Shotgun Cannon
A weapon that Rudeus develop after taking Orsted suggestion about the Gatling gun to make it fire multiple stone cannons in one shot to counter Water God Style practitioner. This weapon is currently replacing 『Arrogant Water Dragon King』 as his main weapon when not wearing 『Magic Armor Mk I 』. Rudeus stated that this weapon is a very user-friendly weapon.
Lithograph Stone
Based off of the seven powers stone created by Technique God, Orsted created a stone that would allow long-range communication through writing on the Large Stone. Anything written on the main stone will appear on the sub-stones. Having a main and a sub-stone for the other person's main stone will allow for long-range communication. The stone also requires a bit of magic to actually use so it is not a widespread tool.
Scroll Vernier
The second Roxy made machine. A tool that was mounted on the back of the MK II. It has a bulky steampunk look to it that carries folded scrolls ready for activation. If a button near the waist is pressed with magic power, a corresponding slot with a scroll is automatically activated. There are 5 slots by each hand with a total of 10 types of scrolls.
The Bone Ring of Laxus
The Ring was given to him by Death God Randolph to show to Kishirika to gain favor. Kishirika told Rudeus to keep it since it may be useful. The Ring was originally owned by Death God Laxus who created the ring to kill the Dark King Vita. The ring works by using the death of the person the ring's holder relied on the most to break the illusion. The spiritual form of the Ring is a dirty black skeleton with a crown. The ring would not activate without the Ring's holder having experienced such a death. For Rudeus, that death was Paul's and an image of Paul's death appeared in each dream showed by the Vita. The ring caused Dark King Vita to self destruct and die. The ring broke after fulfilling its purpose.
Atofe-hand
A gift from Atoferatofe given to Rudeus, a wooden box that contains flesh from Atofe. After getting both of his arms cut off by North God Kalman III and former Sword God Gal Farion, Atofe-hand attached itself to Rudeus. It looks obsidian black and is hard as stone, Rudeus describes it as stronger than Zariff's Prosthetic Arm.
Wooden Pendant
A pendant hand made by Sylphiette for Rudeus' 10th birthday at the suggestion of her father that is a good luck charm handed down in their family then Lilia is supposed to send it to Rudeus but the Teleport Incident occurred.  Lilia holds on to the pendant until Rudeus rescues her and Aisha in the Shirone Kingdom but didn't tell him it was made by Syphiette and when Elinalise Dragonroad sees the pendant she shows it matching emblem engraved on her sword. Rudeus later realizes that Sylphiette made the pendant when they were at the Forest of Hail.
MT-Wooden Pendant

Since childhood, as part of his training in magic, he has been making dolls (figures) that apply chantless earth magic. There was a time when he was obsessed with figurines and plastic models in his previous life, so his dolls are quite good, and Zanoba, who is a doll otaku, calls them "supreme".

Production[]

Rifujin na Magonote commented that he created Rudeus aware of his controversial personality. He intended Rudeus' actions would be more meaningful in the process. He had no issue criticizing Rudeus at an early stage and left it to the audience to judge him. Magnote wanted the audience to pay attention to a specific side of his character and be able to relate to him. Earlier, he said that I felt a big response in episodes 6 to 7 of the web version of the novels, but that was just when Roxy took Rudeus out. Thanks to her, Rudeus overcomes the trauma. Such a story gave a warm impression to his readers and made him think, "Let's grow in this direction."

After publishing the first parts of his work, Rifujin wrote that he intended the series to last at least a hundred chapters. Due to criticism towards his work, Rifujin considered ending the series prematurely but was inspired to continue when his work reached the first place on Syosetu's daily rankings. Originally, the story arc where Rudeus' reunites with Aisha was supposed to be completely different from the published work. The author intended to have Lilia die off-screen, and Aisha to be hiding under a different identity. However, he found Lilia's death anticlimactic and decided against it; thus, he had to rewrite the story arc to make sense of her survival and lack of contact. Rifujin stated the story arc might be bizarre due to the changes but expresses no regrets in his decision; he noted Lilia's survival made him reconsider Zenith's condition in the story.

Keeping his memories of his previous life, Rudeus quickly learns to read and eventually starts practicing magic. Noticing his aptitude, Rudeus' parents hire the adventurer Roxy Migurdia as his magic teacher. Roxy has some doubts at first about tutoring him due to his tender age until she witnesses his unique ability to cast magic instantly and realizes his potential. The next day, Rudeus leaves his home for the first time accompanied by Roxy. He gets distressed over his past trauma, when he was severely bullied by his classmates in school that led to him becoming a recluse, but he ends up overcoming it once he realizes how Roxy has blended well with the villagers, despite all the prejudice she usually suffers due to her demon origin. In the exam, Rudeus manages to summon a massive thunderstorm and Roxy declares that he passed. Roxy then departs to continue her journey and Rudeus thanks her for everything she has done for him.

Sylph becomes friends with Rudeus and starts learning magic from him, and it is revealed Sylph is capable of casting magic without incantations as well. Six months later, Rudeus brings Sylph home during a storm and takes away Sylph's clothes by force so that they can take a bath together. However, he discovers that Sylph is a girl and her full name is Sylphiette. Despite Rudeus' apology to Sylphiette, she starts avoiding him, much to his chagrin. Sometime later, Sylphiette approaches Rudeus, and the two make up, with Rudeus determined to cherish the first true friend he has made in his new life.

To protect Lilia from Zenith's wrath, Rudeus convinces his mother to forgive her by having Paul take all the blame for the incident, despite realizing that she was the one who seduced him, which earns him Lilia's gratitude and loyalty. Zenith and Lilia give birth to two girls, named Norn and Aisha, respectively, and Rudeus considers leaving to study at the Ronoa Magic Academy after receiving a letter from Roxy encouraging him to, but Sylphiette does not want him to leave her side and he decides to look for a job to pay for her tuition as well. However, Paul forbids him from returning home or meeting Sylphiette for the next five years. In the city of Roa, Rudeus meets his employer, Philip Boreas Greyrat, who is also the mayor and his father's cousin, and is tasked to teach Philip's daughter Eris. However, once Rudeus is introduced to Eris, she acts hostile towards him. Certain that Eris will not listen to him at all, Rudeus comes with a plan to gain her trust by faking their kidnapping with her father's consent. Rudeus and Eris are captured and after convincing her to cooperate, he uses his magic to escape with her. Back in Roa, Rudeus discovers that one of Philip's servants is working with their captors and they took advantage of his plan to stage a real kidnapping. Rudeus fights the kidnappers to protect Eris until Ghislaine comes to their rescue, killing the criminals and arresting the servant. Once they return home, Eris accepts Rudeus as her tutor and he begins living in her house.

Philip thanks Rudeus for protecting Eris and warns him to not reveal to anyone his connections with the Greyrat family or he may be targeted again. While Ghislaine begins teaching swordsmanship to Eris and Rudeus, Rudeus teaches magic, literacy and math to both. However, Eris usually skips classes out of boredom and Rudeus decides to give her one day off per week to encourage her. While taking a stroll in the city, Eris attempts to buy Rudeus an expensive book, but he refuses, claiming that she cannot give presents to others without her own money and suggests her father to give her an allowance. With her allowance, Eris presents Rudeus with a vial he was previously interested in, which puts him in a pinch, as he is in fear of revealing to her and Ghislaine that it is in fact an aphrodisiac.

With the approaching date of Eris' tenth birthday party, Rudeus allows her dance teacher to take over part of his tutoring schedule to have her improve, while he makes use of his newfound free time to learn other languages. Despite that, Eris barely improves her dancing and considers giving up, but Rudeus encourages her to continue and starts helping with her lessons. As Rudeus makes some progress on his foreign language skills with Ghilsaine and Roxy's help, Eris does not improve at all and on the day of the party, she fails to dance with another noble. Rudeus steps in and successfully dances with Eris after instructing her to incorporate some of her fighting skills in her moves. After the party, Rudeus meets Eris' grandfather Sauros, who sees a strange ball of light in the sky and fears it could be an ominous sign.

Two years later, Eris, and her family hold a birthday party for Rudeus, who is disappointed at first that his own family could not attend due to the increase of monster activity around the country. Rudeus is presented with a top quality magic staff and Philip expresses his will to have Rudeus marry Eris and become his successor, but Rudeus rejects the offer. Later that night, Rudeus is surprised to see Eris waiting in his room. He then attempts to have sex with her, but she pushes him away. Realizing his mistake, Rudeus apologizes to Eris, who forgives him. A few days later, a huge cloud of mana forms in the sky and the legendary hero Perugius Dola sends his aide Arumanfi to investigate. Suspicious that Rudeus, who was practicing with his new staff alongside Eris and Ghislaine, could be involved with the cloud's appearance, Arumanfi attacks him, but Ghislaine defends Rudeus and confirms his innocence when a massive burst of light envelops them.
9 "A Chance Encounter"

Takahiro Tamano, Hiroki Hirano Hiroki Hirano Atsushi Kobayashi March 8, 2021
Inside his dreams, and looking like his past self, Rudeus has a short encounter with an elusive being known as the Human-God, who instructs him to rely on and help the man who saved him. He then awakens in his current body and learns that he and Eris are stranded in the middle of the Demon Continent, and were rescued by Ruijerd Superdia, a member of the dreaded Superd race, who becomes their friend and promises to escort them home. Ruijerd brings Rudeus and Eris to the nearby Migurdia village, which is Roxy's birthplace. During their stay, Rudeus learns from Ruijerd that his tribe's ill repute comes from the cursed spears they received from the Demon-God Laplace, which turned them into mindless murderers, and that the spear in his possession belonged to his son, whose death by his hands made him recover his senses. Moved by Ruijerd's determination to clear his race's name, Rudeus decides to help him, and the trio departs from the village to begin their journey across the Demon Continent.

She explains that unlike Rudeus who was reincarnated as a child, she was summoned to the fantasy world as she is now five years ago though she hasn't aged since. Orsted found her and took her under his care, and she has been studying summoning magic ever since, though she lacks mana capacity and cannot cast magic herself. She makes a deal with Rudeus where he will use his mana to assist her in her experiments in return for her knowledge about teleportation. She further explains that the mass teleportation disaster was possibly a side effect of the spell that summoned her to the fantasy world. On the way back, Fitz is glad to hear Rudeus has no romantic feelings for Nanahoshi.

One year after enrolling in the university, Rudeus notices that the other students are in awe of him thanks to the reputation he had built up defeating Fitz, Linia, Pursena, and Badigadi, but turns down suggestions to take a leadership role. Later, he receives an invitation from Soldat to attend a clan reunion. After the reunion, he parts with Elinalise and Cliff, who plan to do some adventuring to give Cliff experience. After meeting Fitz again in town and in the library, Rudeus realizes that he has romantic feelings for Fitz, and begins to have doubts that Fitz is male. During another meeting in the library, Fitz accidentally falls on top of Rudeus, and he is able to confirm that she is in fact female. Fitz flees in embarrassment and Rudeus realizes that for a brief moment, he felt an erection. Now knowing Fitz's true sex and that she holds the key to curing his impotence, Rudeus decides to start a relationship with her.

With Fitz's secret now known to Rudeus, Ariel pressures her to reveal her identity to him. However, Fitz is still uncertain if Rudeus remembers her as Sylphie, so Ariel and Luke come up with a plan to help jog Rudeus' memory. Later, Fitz invites Rudeus to accompany her to gather a rare flower deep in the forest despite it being the middle of winter. Rudeus agrees and the pair travel into the forest. Fitz then secretly casts a spell to cause it to rain, soaking both her and Rudeus before they can reach shelter inside a cave. Rudeus strips off his wet clothes to avoid hypothermia and advises Fitz to do the same, but Fitz insists that Rudeus strip her instead. Rudeus complies and recognizes her as Sylphie, much to her relief. Now properly reunited with Rudeus, Sylphie admits that she has fallen in love with him.

Rudeus admits he loves Slyphie as well, but to his dismay he cannot make love to her since his impotence still isn't fully cured. Sylphie reports back to Ariel and Luke, with Luke agreeing to help Sylphie find a cure for Rudeus' impotence out of sympathy for him. Luke gifts Sylphie a rare and powerful aphrodisiac that should counter Rudeus' impotence while Ariel provides some advice on how to seduce him. Sylphie meets Rudues later that night and they both imbibe the aphrodisiac, which helps push them to make love. The next morning, after realizing that Sylphie hasn't abandoned him, Rudeus experiences an emotional catharsis and overcomes the trauma caused by Eris leaving him, and is cured of his impotence. Rudeus then thanks Ariel for her help by pledging his loyalty to her, and then asks for Sylphie's hand in marriage which she accepts. Ariel releases Sylphie from her obligation to disguise herself as Fitz and accepts Rudeus as part of her inner circle. Sylphie then thanks Ariel and Luke for everything they've done for her.

Controversy[]

Aisha Greyrat's after-story[]

One of the web novel short stories from the after-story collection Dasoku-hen (Redundancy), titled "The Moment Aisha Greyrat Stopped Being a Maid", sparked a lot of controversy among its Japanese readers. In response, the author had initially planned to make some revisions, but figured it would not be good enough, and after receiving a notice from Shōsetsuka ni Narō management that it violated their terms of service, on February 24, 2016, the author announced that he had decided to scrap the short story altogether and would write a remake in the future.

LexBurner's controversy[]

On February 8, 2021, before the premiere of the fifth episode of the anime adaptation, a Chinese streaming network, Bilibili, temporarily halted the streaming of the anime on the grounds of a "technical failure." According to fan speculation, it might have been linked to the actions of the popular Chinese influencer LexBurner, who insulted the series and its fans, with one of his remarks saying that it is "for bottom-feeders in the social hierarchy." Incited by his words, his followers went to the media-reviewing website, Douban, to review-bomb the series with a 1-star rating; although the series concurrently enjoyed a 9.2/10 rating on Bilibili. This has led to LexBurner, who was one of Bilibili's top streamers, being banned from the site. Later, author Rifujin na Magonote commented on LexBurner's actions as follows: "His words are only his personal opinion, and he is free to hold whatever views he likes. Although I am displeased at how he has insulted other viewers, anime is not made only for successful people, so I hope that those who can enjoy it will enjoy it." He further commented: "If that is the kind of online presence he is, that's just the way it is sometimes. Even in Japan, there are plenty of people like him, although they might not have his influence. As far as I am concerned, instead of engaging with him, I think it is more important to ignore him and grow your own communities. Thank you!".

Reception[]

Web and light novel[]

In the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2017 by Takarajimasha, Mushoku Tensei reached the fourth place in the ranking. It is ranked seventh for the 2018 edition; and for the 2019 edition, the series is placed eighth. On Syosetu's rankings, the web novel made cumulative appearances as the most popular work on the website. The light novels have appeared on Oricon's charts and have also ranked on T-site's novel popularity polls. By August 2021, the light novels reached 8.5 million copies in circulation. By February 2022, the series had over 10 million copies in circulation. By June 2023, the series had over 13 million copies in circulation.

The main character of the series Rudeus, has been criticized for being overtly perverted. Anime News Network found Rudeus hard to sympathize, as in early chapters he barely develops connections. However, the way Rudeus interacts with Roxy during his training as a mage was noted to benefit him, was the subject of praise. Real Sound was concerned about how the narrative portrays Rudeus' previous life as it appears to focus highly on retired school students and issues they had at school comparing it to the famous light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. Nevertheless, Rudeus commitment to surpassing his flaws in his new life was noted to turn him into a more sympathetic main character. Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World novelist Tappei Nagatsuki said that one of the strongest points of Mushoku Tensei was the handling of Rudeus who is noted to suffer in a similar fashion to the main character from the visual novel Clannad. Mindo Manihar Pasaribu from Institutional Repository of the University of North Sumatra notes Rudeus, who was previously a cowardly, weak, insecure character into a hard-working, strong, or fearless character who is more confident and compassionate; This makes the novels of Mushoku Tensei served as a major appeal to the audience. Writer Niji Kusano from Real Sound said that the key to Mushoku Tensei's success was how deep is the success Rudeus achieved in his new life despite how common it is in Isekai stories. Another element that helps the novel outstand is the mix of realism Rudeus is often seen while being mixed with the popular high-fantasy style.

Anime[]

The anime adaptation received positive responses from both critics and audiences, having considered one of the best anime of 2021. IGN gave a positive review, writing, "In a time where every type of isekai is being developed, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation takes a joyful and wholehearted approach to the genre."

At the Anime Trending Awards, the series receives 18 nominations in total, with seven wins. It receives three nominations, including Best Fantasy category twice in two consecutive years, at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Wiriting for the first season, Irfan Ghani Muhammad from Universitas Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember noticed Mushoku Tensei often tests Rudeus' morality from different point of views. His fears of the outside world change when Roxy starts training him and takes him through a ride across the town which changes the protagonist's point of view of how society works. The scholar mentions Roxy's character faces a similar arc due to her differences from her people. HITC found the anime properly followed the novel's narrative, most importantly Rudeus' coming-of-age story, which appealed to the audience. Comic Book Resources saw the focus on Rudeus' emotions as what marks the series a major departure from other isekai storylines.

The early episodes of the second season earned controversial responses due to the more miserable portrayal of Rudeus while highlighting a decrease in the animation values. Positive response focused on how more depth was given to Rudeus as he was now alone and tried interacting with new characters.
