We learn a short time after Elma joins the crew something interesting about her race. Elves can only be impregnated once they fall in love; the doctor giving her the news that she was fertile just after having sex with Hiro a few days ago. Embarrassing because they didnt use protection and it means she had fallen for him. Luckily Elma wasn't pregnant yet.
In a hilarious sense, both Mimi and Elma forget that Hiro claims to have amnesia, and therefore wouldn't know the unspoken custom that a woman is typically only invited to join a man's crew because he's wants to have sex with her; Hiro was only offering them a home and source of income to pay off their debts by taking a percentage of his bounties.
This is easily passed off the first time for Mimi; it helps both she and Hiro were virgins. It could be seen as her simply just being in love with him enough to skip regular courtship.
