The Familiar of Zero (ゼロの使い魔, Zero no Tsukaima) is a fantasy and comedy-oriented series of Japanese light novels written by Noboru Yamaguchi, with illustrations by Eiji Usatsuka. Media Factory published 20 volumes between June 2004 and February 2011. The series was left unfinished due to the author's death on April 4, 2013, but was later concluded in two volumes released in February 2016 and February 2017 with a different author, making use of notes left behind by Yamaguchi. The story features several characters from the second year class of a magic academy in a fictional magical world with the main characters being the inept mage Louise and her familiar from Earth, Saito Hiraga.

Between 2006 and 2012, the series was adapted by J.C.Staff into four anime television series and an additional original video animation episode. The first anime series was licensed by Geneon Entertainment in English, but the license expired in 2011. Sentai Filmworks has since re-licensed and re-released the first series and released the other three series in North America. A manga version drawn by Nana Mochizuki was serialized in Media Factory's manga magazine Monthly Comic Alive between August 2006 and October 2009. The manga was released by Seven Seas Entertainment in North America. Three additional spin-off manga were also created, as were three visual novels.

Synopsis[]

Louise is a noble girl who is terrible at magic, as her attempts usually result in an explosion. She is nicknamed "Louise the Zero" by her classmates, due to the inability to use any of the four magic elements. Early in the school year at the Tristain Academy of Magic, the second year students perform a special ritual where they summon their familiar, which serves as their eternal protector and partner, and is usually some sort of magical creature. But Louise summons Saito Hiraga, an ordinary teenage boy from Japan, leaving her totally humiliated.

Due to the sacredness of the ritual, Louise reluctantly accepts Saito as her familiar, but proceeds to treat Saito as any other familiar, only worse, making him wash her clothes, sleep on a bed of hay, and whipping him with a riding crop when he upsets her. The Familiar of Zero follows the adventures of Louise and Saito as they help their classmates and friends, while occasionally blundering into situations where they risk their lives to save one another. Saito tries to find a way to get back to Japan, but he also has a mysterious power that allows him to wield swords and other weapons to perform heroic feats. They also eventually learn the truth behind Louise's magic inabilities. As Saito's and Louise's friendship grows and they start to work together, they ultimately fall in love with each other.

Evaluation[]

As of August 2018, the cumulative circulation of the worldwide series has exceeded 6.8 million. The 21st volume, which was handed over to another person after the author's death, ranked first in the Oricon weekly light novel ranking (dated March 7, 2016), and it was reprinted less than a month after its release .

Light Novels[]

The Familiar of Zero began as a series of light novels written by Noboru Yamaguchi and illustrated by Eiji Usatsuka under the original title Zero no Tsukaima. Media Factory published 20 volumes in Japan between June 25, 2004 and February 25, 2011. Further publication was threatened by Yamaguchi's advanced cancer, which he succumbed to on April 4, 2013, leaving the series unfinished. Yamaguchi had planned the series to end with 22 volumes. However, it was later decided by the publisher to continue the series in the author's absence, due in part to calls from fans to continue the series, as well as Yamaguchi's family wanting to see it completed. Yamaguchi had dictated the remaining plot of the series, including its ending, and entrusted it to the editors. Media Factory released volume 21 on February 25, 2016 and the final volume 22 on February 24, 2017. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the series in 2007 under the title Zero's Familiar, but later cancelled the release of the novels.

The first season aired in Japan between July 3 and September 25, 2006, and contained thirteen episodes. In April 2007 at Anime Boston, Geneon announced that they had picked up the English dubbing rights of the first season of the anime series under the title The Familiar of Zero. In July 2008, Geneon Entertainment and Funimation Entertainment announced an agreement to distribute select titles in North America. While Geneon Entertainment still retained the license, Funimation Entertainment assumed exclusive rights to the manufacturing, marketing, sales and distribution of select titles. The Familiar of Zero was one of several titles involved in the deal. Funimation released a complete box set of the series on November 4, 2008. Visual Novels[]

Three visual novels for the PlayStation 2 were developed by Marvelous Interactive in which the player assumes the role of Saito Hiraga. The first, Zero no Tsukaima: Koakuma to Harukaze Concerto (ゼロの使い魔 小悪魔と春風の協奏曲, lit. The Familiar of Zero: Goblins and the Spring Breeze Concerto), was released in limited and regular editions on February 15, 2007 in Japan. This was followed by Zero no Tsukaima: Muma ga Tsumugu Yokaze no Fantasy (ゼロの使い魔 夢魔が紡ぐ夜風の幻想曲) on November 29, 2007 and Zero no Tsukaima: Maigo no Period to Ikusen no Symphony (ゼロの使い魔 迷子の終止符と幾千の交響曲) on November 6, 2008.

Character[]

Saito Hiraga (平賀才人, Hiraga Saito), later known as Saito Chevalier de Hiraga (才人·シュヴァリエ·ド·平賀, Saitō Shuvuariē do Hiraga) when he got his noble status, is the familiar spirit of Louise de la Vallière and is otherwise known as Gandálfr (ᚷᚢᚾᛞᛟᛚᚠ, lit. God's Left Hand). Later on, he becomes Lífþrasir (ᛚᛁᚠᛞᚱᚨᛋᛁᚱ, lit. God's Heart) after being summoned as familiar of Tiffania Westwood. After marrying Louise, he is later known as Saito Chevalier de Hiraga des Ornière (才人·シュヴァリエ·ド·平賀·デース·オルーニユェル, Saitō Shuvuariē do Hiraga dēsu Oruniērū).

Background[]

"I'm not a man if I can't make the girl I love smile!"

― Saito

Saito is a student from Tokyo, Japan. One day, his laptop got broken and he decided to repair it; however, learning of the expensive fee for repair, he does not continue the repair, thinking of applying for a part-time job. As he walks down the streets, a mysterious portal appears before him, which can be only seen by him. He touches it out of curiosity, but it sucks him up despite his attempts to break free from it. Upon getting sucked, he arrives in Halkeginia as summoned by Louise de la Vallière as her familiar. He is 17 years old at the beginning of the story. Although he was an ordinary high school student, he was summoned from Tokyo to another world, Hallucigenia, as a "familiar" by the summoning magic of Louise.

He thinks things with the values of modern Japan and is angry and resists the unreasonableness of the Hallucigenia world without hiding them, so he is considered by the people around him to be a wild person. In addition to the extreme ups and downs of emotions, the beliefs are intense and emotions are intense. Even if he is suddenly summoned to another world, he adapts without worrying too much. In fact, he is a hot-blooded man with an indomitable fighting spirit that can withstand any difficulties or obstacles. His full name seems to be difficult for Hallucigenia people to pronounce, and it is often misunderstood as "Hirigal Saiton".

At the time of the familiar contract (contract servant) with Louise, the run "Gandalfr", which is a proof of the familiar, emerged on the left hand of the talented person. This is the mark of the legendary familiar "God's left hand, Gandalf" who can freely handle anything as long as it is a weapon. Furthermore, from the 20th volume, he was selected as a familiar of Tiffania, and the runes of "Increasing the magical power of the bearer of the void in exchange for the soul" and "Lífþrasirl, the heart of God" emerged in his chest. Gandalf's runes were once lost as a replacement for Ruiz in Volume 7 after fighting 70,000 soldiers in the Republic of Albion and being seriously injured.  After that, Ruiz was a talented man . Regain Gandalf's runes by summoning and re-contracting.

Initially, only the ability of Gandalf was relied on, but after many battles and special training of Agnes, defeating multiple magic dolls Skírnir without using the power of Gandalf, and living the magic of Tabasa who confronted as an enemy. It has grown enough to avoid it.

He was praised by Henrietta for his many credits in Volume 9, and became a nobleman with the title of Chevalier , and at the same time became the deputy captain of the newly established Guards Corps "Water Spirit Knights". With his aristocratic status, the official document at Tristain will be given the full name "Site Chevalier de Hiraga". In the 10th volume, in order to rescue Tabasa who was captured by Gallia, he said that stepping into a neighboring country with aristocratic rank could cause conflict between countries, so once the status of the knight and the position of the deputy captain of the guard knight corps were changed to Henrietta. Although he returned, he returned to the aristocratic position in Volume 11 and holds his position.

After being summoned, he had been unable to read the characters of Hallucigenia for a long time, but after the rescue of Tabasa, she became able to read them. In Volume 14, Pope Vittorio and his familiar Julio are forced to choose between returning to the original world or staying in this world, but after suffering they choose to remain in Hallucigenia, the "spear" of Gandalf. Using the Tiger tank , he repelled the Jormungant controlled by King Gallia and Myoznitonirun. From Volume 15, he has the titles of "Hero of Albion" and "Hero of the Tiger Road". In Volume 16, the full name "Site Chevalier de Hiraga de Ornière" is written by the territory of "De Ornier" given by Henrietta. Due to these hospitality and activities, they are regarded as heroes among the commoners, and even though the play is made, they are jealous of the aristocrats centered on Mage, and the brothers of the element who received the request will aim for their lives.

When he was summoned, he hated the selfish Louise, but gradually learned of her kindness and anguish while spending time with him, and decided to protect her as a familiar. As for her relationship with Louise, she once joked to her and Delphi that "(Louis) is in love with me," but she said she was her. I didn't understand her true intention because she didn't express her feelings honestly . He is very sincere in his "words" and "feelings", and he receives unreasonable punishment from Ruiz and the surface because "I said" I like "to Ruiz, and it is irresistible that the words and feelings are lying". Even if he was put on his upper sleeve or was pressed by another heroine, he never said "like" other than Ruiz, and he continued to like Ruiz. However, in the depths of her consciousness, she seems to have been attracted to Henrietta, and she finally has an affair in Volume 16. She runs away from Louise, who witnesses an affair, but she reconciles in Volume 18 and vows her future. However, she is taken to Sahara by Allies in Volume 19. She is there and she is about to be taken her dementia medicine, but she escapes with the help of Luxhana.

In Volume 20, he was "resummoned" from Tiffania's strong feelings for the site, signed a familiar contract, and gained the power of "God's Heart, Lífþrasir." He is strangely in the same situation as Sasha 6000 years ago, where he also serves as Gandalf and Reeve Slasil. With the power of Reeveslasil sucking up his vitality and not even being able to move without the power of Derflinger, he learns the truth of the catastrophe 6000 years ago and embarks on a holy land that emerges to stop the Pope's invasion of the Earth. He dismisses the Knights Templar and Julio and arrives at Ruiz, but when Ruiz himself, who knows the truth like him, is stabbed by Derflinger, the void disappears and the power of Gandalf and Reeve Slasil is lost. Save your life.

After that, he became a hero who saved Hallucigenia by destroying the spirit stone of the sacred place that caused the great uplift with Ruiz who revived in exchange for the life of Derflinger. After returning to Tristain, she formally proposes to Louise and persuades the Duke of Vallier to marry for being given the rank of Viscount. Immediately after that, the Pope gave him a circular mirror of the founder, and if he was alone, he would be able to return to Earth. A talented man who struggles to return to Earth or stay, he is persuaded by Ruiz and decides to return alone. However, with Ruiz, who was able to cross to the earth by the power of Derflinger, the story ends when the two of them finally return to the earth.

In the animated version of "F", before the final battle with the Ancient Dragon, Ruiz, who feared the death of a talented person due to the abuse of Reeves Rasil's ability, was deceived and returned to Japan through the "World Door". However, he could not leave Louise alone, and jumped in with a fighter plane stolen for the total solar eclipse that had just occurred on the earth and returned to Hallucigenia. After subduing the Ancient Dragon, he used up the power of Reeve Slasil, but survived with the power of Gandalf, proposed to Louise, and got married. After that, he returned to Japan with Ruiz at the "World Door", showed Tokyo, and then pushed the chime of his parents' house, and the story ended.

Partner[]

A talented companion, the magic sword "Intelligence Sword" with a will. His first appearance is a single-edged longsword, which can be spoken by clicking the metal fittings of the habaki (the root of the blade). The talented person carries it on his back because it is about 150 cm including the handle and is too long to hang on his waist. It is just a spiritual being who possesses a sword now, and the sword itself is not the main body. It has lived for 6,000 years and is said to be the legendary sword used by the former "Gandalf". When he learns that a talented man is "Gandalf" at a Tristanian weapons store, he sells himself and becomes his property. The intelligence weapons themselves aren't rare enough to be worth it, and they're exceptionally low because they look like rusty, tattered swords, and the shopkeeper has closed his mouth to Derflinger's bad mouth. I was able to purchase it at. The talented person was called a "buddy", and the talented person, he was like a comrade who fought together.

Although it is a weapon for the familiar of the void, it is brought to life by the indigenous magic that is originally in opposition to the void and the ancestor Brimil. He seems to know more about the founder Brimil and the void, but he says he's been so old that he forgets most of it. However, he sometimes remembers the time signature and has saved the talented people in a pinch several times. Like a legendary sword, "You can change the appearance to a rusted sword and return it", "Absorb attack magic and manipulate Gandalf's body as much as it absorbs", and "Read information on the ability and weapons of the swordfighter you touched" Has special abilities such as.

He has a light-hearted personality and often calls him "Odereta!". There is also a lonely side, and you can not talk if it is in the scabbard (in the anime version, you can talk by pulling out the brim without permission even if it is in the scabbard), so do not talk with the other party while it is in the scabbard Immediately.

When a talented person made a second "familiar contract" with Ruiz, there was a depiction that he was afraid that the runes would not stick to his chest, and he was afraid of the appearance of the fourth empty familiar "Leave Slasil". Seems to be. Also, he hates Forsate, the ancestor of the founding of Romalia, and even though he has no acquaintance with the founder Brimil, he seems to dislike the Romalia Empire, which preaches "the teachings of Brimil". In Volume 16, he inhales the magical power of Dudu's "Blade", but his blade bursts and disappears because it exceeds the permissible amount. In the 17th volume, a talented person said, "I can't do anything without you," and Ruiz and Siesta, who learned of the disappearance of Derflinger, were sad.

In the 19th volume, he is kidnapped by elves and revived in an unnamed Japanese sword in front of Tiffania and a talented man who was taken to Sahara. It took a long time to return because he was able to transfer to the current Japanese sword just before the longsword in front of him broke, but the structure of the knife was too different and it was difficult to reveal his intention. Met. At that time, he had a long time to think, and he remembered that he was made by an elf and that he pierced Brimil. Also, it seems that you can not only talk from the description in Volume 19 but also talk about telepathy. After that, he gets a dormancy for a while and regains all his memories. After penetrating Ruiz, he revives Ruiz with the void magical true "life" that was hung on himself. He exhausted all his power and shattered completely, thanking him for meeting his best companion, Site. The debris was then buried in Lake Ragdrian, leaving only the brim as a keepsake. However, he helped the site and Louise pass through the gate opened by the founder's mirror at the very end.

In the anime version "F", it shatters when it absorbs the flames of the Ancient Dragon, but it stays asleep in the rune of the talented Gandalf. He was temporarily resurrected in the fighter plane that the talent used to return to Hallucigenia, and returned to the runes after the Ancient Dragon was subdued.

Sacred Runes[]

Familiar of Zero - Gandalf
GandálfrLeft Hand of God
Gandálfr, also known as the Left Hand of God, is a legendary type of familiar, with only two known familiars of this type, including one of the legendary Founder Brimir's familiars and Saito Hiraga. It is notable for being the sole type of familiar of Void mages. A Gandálfr's primary combat duty is to guard the Void mage as he or she slowly casts Void magic. Gandálfr are almost as legendary as their Void-magic-using masters and are even known to be able to take on armies of thousands alone with their abilities.
They are unique for being completely human, unlike other common magical or beastly familiars. The only indicator of their being familiars is the rune markings located on a part of their body.
The primary power of a Gandálfr is absolute mastery of any item meant for combat, from swords and pistols to artillery cannons and fighter aircraft (though in the light novels, even Kirche von Zerbst's ceremonial sword gift to Saito activated this power). On physical contact with such weapons, the Gandálfr's runes will glow, and the familiar gains heightened strength, agility, endurance, and reflexes in addition to complete proficiency over the weapon. These reinforcements linger only for a while when the power is deactivated; a Gandálfr who sustains normally fatal damage while powered up will quickly face the brunt of the damages when he returns to normal, which may cause him to collapse out of exhaustion or even possibly death.
According to Julio Chesaré, Gandalfrs will have signatures, which is any weapon deemed the most at the era. For example, Sasha wields s sword and spear, and Saito wields a Sword and a Gun.
Although it is not stated, it is hinted that Gandalfr also has mastery over the scientific application of technology to be included in using any weapon. This side-effect ultimately forges the familiar body into that of a warrior, as seen with Saito despite being a brain-type human.
Also, a Gandálfr has sensory connections with its master, allowing both master and familiar to see or hear what the other does, knowingly or unknowingly.
Familiar of Zero - Lífþrasir
LífþrasirlThe Heart of God
Lífþrasir can increase the magical power of a void mage spell increasing the strength of this launch, however, using this power shortens his life force, and using it with no control would kill the Lifþrasir. To put it simply, Lifprasir does not catalyze spells but amplifies them using the familiar’s life force as fuel. However, that is only half of its power and the most gentle. Its other half is the power to stockpile magic, spells make them stronger, and for lack of better words turn themselves into a bomb. It was found in the chest of Saito.

Game[]

Series overview

The design and basic settings of both works are based on the first period of the TV anime version, and the voice actors of the existing characters. same as the TV anime version.
  • Like the TV animation, the number of stories (in the third work, "chapter" format for the convenience of production) and subtitles are set, and story breaks are provided. After each episode, a screen with almost the same specifications is inserted in the three works called "Coffee Break", and the save menu and the heroine with a high emotional value at that time are displayed as "Best Partner". Select "Next Story" to proceed to the next story (in the third work, it was in chapter format, but in this menu, it remains "Next Story").
  • The player acts as a talented person (however, standing pictures and voices are prepared like a character on the screen), makes friends with the heroine targeted for capture, and overcomes difficulties (contents that overcome difficulties) In the latter half of the story of the second work and a part of the third work, some developments change the taste a little).

If the tsundere event is generated a certain number of times, the tsundere system will be forced to branch to Louise normal end route regardless of the emotional level when the heroine's route branches, so the tsundere system has great significance for capturing other heroines.
  • In the second work, the version has been upgraded to "2.0", and the opponents who will keep the talented people at the Tsundere event are now randomly selected from two patterns, one (Louis) and two (Louis + one other heroine).
  • In the third work, it will be "Tsundere System 3rd STRIKE" whose specifications have been significantly changed, and the status of 4 categories of "Human", "Dog", "Mole", and "Microorganism" is set by the change of "Tsundere" parameter, and each The tsundere event will be triggered when you are a "microorganism" at the end of the chapter.
